I think the key stages that broke down XFactor ratings were;

The quadruple elimination twist in 2011,
Bringing back an eliminated act half way through the live shows,
The Voice (it’s no coincidence that XF2012 ratings dropped 3 million year on year, months after the voice uk launched with 10 million)
The constant change of judges (the 2011 auditions actually rated better than 2010, so clearly the new generation of judges did not at all harm the show in the first place, but then doing it year after year eventually did)
The constant, gimmicky format changes (the six chair challenge is the only good change the show has had (this echos in how BGT as stayed much the same, except adding the golden buzzer) - every other unnecessary change (like the flash vote, lifeline vote, quadruple eliminations, love judges houses, prize fight, less live shows etc) have been terrible)
Manipulated choices (last years Judges Houses was horrendous, with half the acts being wildcards or acts who missed 6CC, clearly there by producers choice and not because their judges connected with them. The public ALWAYS get behind people that the judges connect with, like Cheryl & Alex, Dannii & Matt, Tulisa & Little Mix, Nicole & her boys etc)

So basically, my point is that changing Judges is by far not the worst problem with the show, but doing it constantly and flipping back and forward is a problem. In my opinion, they need somebody new who will put everything into the show, rather than the old judges they keep bringing back who clearly don’t give a **** about the acts.
