Victoria & Abdul. Sumptuous, visually spectacular historical fantasy, very lightly peppered with truth. One of those films that makes me think so many people will watch it and think it's actual history. 6/10... and 5 of those 6 points are just for Judi Dench.

The series Victoria that really makes me smile.... take the prettiest actress you can find and everyone will think that's who Victoria was. Film and TV programme makers should be made to produce a disclaimer at the end. Anyhoo, off topic... moving on... |

The Dictator - 7/10
Quite enjoyable film, not one of the best but definitely up there for comedy. |

Walking Out - What a boring film, nothing happens in it, the description is misleading as well. Couldn't wait for it to end 2/10

The Big Sick - thought it might be a little bit like (500) Days of Summer in terms of it having a whole group of characters that I'd end up hating, but it turned out being a little bit like (500) Days of Summer in that I loved it straight away. Can't see myself growing to hate this though. Even though I'm exasperated by Everybody Loves Raymond, I loved Romano in this and Holly Hunter as well. And there were pop-ups from all sorts of actors I recognised (Kala's dad from Sense8, Wilson Wilson from Utopia) which was initially distracting but I loved Kunail's (fictional) family too. Just a really sweet story that I thought could've gone a lot darker at many different moments. I'd give it an 8 or a 9/10.
The Florida Project - literally just finished this one and oh boy, it was intense... I get the film's commentary and it shedding light on low-income families and the desperation of motherhood in such circumstances and all that, but at the same time, the mum (Halley) is very much, arguably, in my most-hated characters of all time. Just unbelievably brash, trashy, nasty, childish, naive, dumb and hateful. At the same time it was very powerful and moving, and kept me gripped. All of the performances - child and adult - were great, and there were some funny moments, but I got the impression (mostly from Twitter SJWs ) I was supposed to sympathise with Halley when really she was a toxic, toxic presence and very little of that can really be attributed to the welfare/employment systems (the profanity and drug use in front of her child, and violence too, her ripping off her John, generally abusing the manager's trust and patience, etc). That said, it's a great movie. I'd say an 8/10 because I felt on-guard for a lot of it.

I, Tonya - absolutely awesome. Margot and Allison are unmissable in this, it's brilliant and well deserves the hype it is getting. I loved it!

game night; oh wow wasn't expecting this at all game night is an american comedy which is actually funny who knew??? the cast work so well together and its just fantastic it blew me away 8/10
red sparrow; a two and a half hour film of Jennifer Lawrence having sex. if that appeals to u then go for it but after like the 8th sex scene I was done especially since it romanticises rape. little to know plot and boring performances red sparrow is beyond awful 1/10 |

Also I, Tonya - I don't really know what to think of it if I'm honest, given the nature of the film (how it depicts several conflicting points of view), but the subject is something innately intriguing. It just didn't feel like it had much of a message to it; it was just a shrug and a "Make up your own mind" sort of affair. Like, whatever directorial comment was made, seemed to just be a commentary on how the media sensationalised the story (which might not be the most coherent argument in... a biopic about it) and how America loves a hate figure.
I guess having just watched the Florida Project before this, I'm a little on-guard about people having overly-forgiving attitudes towards terrible mothers, or glancing over actual victims just to try and explain away criminal behaviour, but that film's an extreme example of it. I guess that reveals my biases Like I got the impression the film (I, Tonya) wanted us to believe Tonya and that Jeff/Shawn/Derrick planned this and she had no part in it, and all her life she's been abused... the film did this so heavy-handedly that I guess it prompted me to just lean towards the alternative? All while dismissing Kerrigan as stuck-up in the same breath? I also wonder how much of a say Kerrigan had in all of this being made. But Janney, Robbie and Stan were all great and creepy and skin-crawling and contemptuous , and I enjoyed it for what it was, so I'd give it a 7 or 8/10.

The Post - it was alright but I can't help but feel I've watched far more interesting political thrillers. I won't pretend to know that much about the people portrayed but it felt very much like "Meryl Streep being Meryl Streep" and I wasn't sure why she was nominated for it when, for example, either of the actresses in The Florida Project would've been more worthy (I figure Bria Vinaite is more of a supporting character, so would opt for the child actress instead as a 'lead'). I did enjoy it and it was very engrossing but it didn't really move me in any way. 7/10.
Wind River on the other hand completely floored me and is possibly one of the best thrillers I've ever watched. I'm already biased in favour of brutal crime dramas set in freezing conditions so I would strongly recommend similar fans (of say, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Killing, etc.) watch this. I didn't have a terribly high opinion of Jeremy Renner prior to this (I haven't seen The Hurt Locker, but from interviews / that awards presenting moment, I got the strong impression he was a gross sleaze. See: Mark Wahlberg.) but that's completely changed. He's stoic, poignant, dark, rootable and confusing all in the same 105 minutes. The action is pretty sudden but expected, but at the same time so visceral that it kept me hooked. Poor Jon Bernthal is doomed to be beat up in everything he does, isn't he? Elizabeth Olsen and Gil Birmingham are both fantastic in this, too. I gave it a full 10/10 on IMDb because it's just that good.

The Disaster Artist - I haven't seen all of the Room yet (although enough clips of it on YouTube at friends' houses when I was younger) so I can't say it all made sense to me but for what it was - and with a 40-50% knowledge of the film - I enjoyed it. The only problem I had with it is that I thought the ending was a bit... of a stretch. I find it hard to believe a premiere for the film would've had the audience in rapturous hysterics. I appreciate they wanted to portray it as the cult hit it is today but it was a silly ending IMO. That said, Franco was great and robbed of an Actor nod. I'd say a 7/10... it was fun but not that great. Maybe an 8 if I see the movie.

you were never really here; grim as you get them you were never really here is incredibly masterful and heartbreaking as the cinematography is to die for and the soundtrack makes the film 8/10
