What is the difference between a girl and a young woman or even female?

This is ridiculous

OK anyway I think it's important to let young people know about transgender / fluid gender issues so they don't feel like they have to conform to male / female stereotypes but, come on, seriously, there are far too many options here and half of them as far as I can tell mean the same things...

In my opinion: male, female and bi-gender male (male who is sometimes female)/bi-gender female (female who is sometimes male) cover gender categories. If you are trans - you would consider yourself as newly male or newly female whichever the case - I see "transgender" as more of a process.

Just as with sexuality: straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual. All the other fancy terms (e.g. asexual, demisexual, pansexual) just describe 'opinions/feelings' of sexuality... If youre "asexual" you dont experience sexual desire, but if youre only romantically interested in/drawn to the opposite sex then you are still straight. "Demisexuals" are bisexual people that focus on an emotional bond, if they tell me 'need an emotional bond but only interested in the same sex' then they are gay. "Pansexuals" are bisexual people that have no preference between males, females, bi-gender males and bi-gender females, in my opinion.

I LOVE THESE TOPICS.
Great post Jords, makes sense

basically they just copied the new Facebook gender choices i think, so i doubt the UK government spent much time or money on this change.

They are just combining age with gender to come up with more and more titles. Age should be covered in the next question on the survey

At 13 are you really suppose to make those concrete distinctions? They could be changing daily, or hourly. Stupid, non news mail item to fill the space usually reserved for news.

I went to see Priscilla Queen of the Desert last Saturday night and I'd rather like to be a drag queen.

Why don't they just have an 'other' option where people can then put in a box what they are? This seems so far fetched and Inefficient, and the 'other' option opens it up to everyone so people can't complain that their gender isn't on there?

Yup, I agree with pretty much all of this.

And maybe I am getting 'sex' and 'gender' mixed up, but if so, why are there both 'sex' and 'gender' answers on the same questionnaire? You have the male and female options...but then all of the other random things added on. This is part of the reason I think it will just be confusing for teens. If someone is (for example demi-girl) they are BOTH female and demi-girl surely? So many of the options appear to be personality traits and nothing at all to do with actual gender.

Showed this to my partner and he said that before long, you won't be able to ask the sex of your baby...or to refer to it as a boy or a girl just incase in a few years it turns out that in their head they are not a boy or a girl. Might sound dramatic but this does seem to be the way things are going :S

When they get a scan in the womb ... is it a boy, girl or any of the other possible options, and the hospital is sued 18 years later for giving the wrong answer

I don't see the problem, it's just a survey. Yes there are a lot of options, but does it not say in the article that this is just a draft? Obviously for the draft they are going to include all the options they can initially think of, but it's likely that the final list of options will be more concise. I think it's interesting research to do anyway because as some people have commented, when they were growing up it was just male/female/gay or whatever, but as we know, there are many people who fall outside of those catagories who have struggled in life as a result. It's easy to ignore that these people exist and have existed because in the past they've been pushed into the shadows, but they do exist. So why not actively try and identify how young people view themselves in terms of gender, if it ends up helping some of them. It's really not going to harm anyone, and it's not going to confuse anyone. If someone taking this survey views themselves as male, they will tick the 'male' option, no harm done. And I don't think much research has been done in this area before so of course it will start off a bit rocky, and there will be a lot of uncertainty as to what gender options should be included, but that will all come together over time. Society's attitudes towards gender and identity are progressing and this is simply a reflection of that. It's not perfect yet but it's a great start.
