Will Smith on getting his Oscar
was crying. He mentioned Denzel's comment to him, "At your Highest moment be careful, that's when the Devil gets you." He also Apologised to the Academy. The Whole show went 15mins over its time. Last edited by arista; 28-03-2022 at 04:41 AM. |

[Up until Smith's assault on Rock,
the show had been running fairly smoothly. Meanwhile, the organizers of the Oscars are under fire for paying 'tribute' to the people of Ukraine without mentioning the country by name or directly addressing Russia's invasion, despite the hosts' eagerness to go after domestic political issues. The 94th Academy Awards got underway Sunday night at 8pm, with ABC carrying the three-hour telecast from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Actress Mila Kunis, who was born in Ukraine, took the stage at the Oscars to address Russia's invasion of her home country, leading a moment of silence after praising 'those who keep fighting through unfathomable darkness.' Kunis, without mentioning Ukraine or Russia by name, said that in recent weeks the world had been shocked by 'recent global events', before introducing country superstar Reba McEntire, who delivered a live performance of Somehow You Do.] https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...rformance.html |

While violence is never ok. Neither was the joke that Chris made. I assume he didn't know about Jada's condition but still wasn't a clever joke to make if you don't know someones story. Will was defending his wife. Imagine how awkward Jada must have felt sensing the awkwardness in the room or perhaps people laughing when she was probably not feeling at her most confident you can see the sadness on her face. Will would have seem that and I get why he was angry and I get why he defended her. Wasn't the right way to do it but I'm siding with Will

Was a poor taste joke tbh and easy to sympathise with Will Smith because of it but you can't react like that, bit weird he was able to just retake his seat and no one did anything about it

IIRC in most US states an "open-hand slap" is considered a much less serious form of assault than a punch (as to be fair, it's much less likely to cause serious injury) but yeah ... I understand his anger but you can't lose your cool to the point of physical assault.
If he'd just shouted clearly angry like he did afterwards I think he'd have gotten the point across. In fact, I think the audience thought it was a planned part of the show until he followed up with the shouting. |

Chris Rock missed a golden opportunity. "When you watch a documentary... you feel smart. Much smarter than... say... Jada Pinkett Smith."
Then just ****ing run |

"Will Smith just slapped the **** outta me!" will easily go down in history as one of the best reactions to getting slapped.

I see people are saying it was staged now, I doubt it though. What benefit would that be to Will Smith? He doesn't need any sort of publicity really

No way it was staged imo, people always say that. Those were all clearly spontaneous and natural reactions - Jada obviously not happy about the joke, Chris being visibly shocked by the slap and Will's angry shouting afterwards
Stripping him of the Oscar would be stupid though |

Yeah I agree Matt, if it were some reality stars or B listers even I'd think maybe it was but Will Smith is a golden boy in Hollywood, he doesn't need any publicity especially the kind that might ruin his image

If it had just been the slap I'd have thought it maybe was staged but the exchange afterwards it's pretty clear what's happened. Messy, really. He was laughing but Jada looked annoyed (tbf I can appreciate why, now knowing why her hair is short) but he's obviously then seen that she's upset and decided to do something about it. Their odd marital issues are probably all wrapped up in there too, things under the surface.
Chris Rock was clearly a bit shaken afterwards. I saw that "Saw" movie he was in - he's not that good an actor outside of comedy roles, no way he was faking that. |

The only thing that would make me a LITTLE sus is if he now starts taking grittier/tougher roles ... then I'm totally going to be eyeballing it as a deliberate image change. Other than that he's built an entire career on being a happy/smiley/laid back character. It's a potential career-ender for those sorts of roles.

Yeah people are making a lot of Will laughing at first but I don't think that means anything either, it probably took a few seconds for him to register what Cris had said, in these situations people sometimes are just in "laugh mode" because its what you're supposed to be doing
