You really have to wonder about teenagers who are SO interested in sexuality that will actually physically attack someone for it. Me thinks they protesteth a bit TOO much.

Thats very sad to hear...of anyone being attacked.

In the same way though, how can we be sure that the attacks are actually homophobic?

I mean, more people are coming out as gay and bi, so it would seem right that more gay people were attacked, as people are attacked for all sorts of reasons.

I know homophobia exists, and people DO get attacked just because of their sexuality, but I think the police are too quick to label attacks as homophobic/racist etc.

Its perfectly fine for a gay bloke to hit a straight bloke, but when it is the other way around, its automatically a homophobic attack. No matter what the circumstances beforehand.

Plus, this sounds awful, but I know a lot of gay people do play on it. Someone I know, I wouldnt say a mate, because I cant stand him, but I was out drinking with him about a month back and was getting cheeky to some random bloke when we were out. When they guy started being nasty back...my 'mate' said go on hit me, Il get you done straight away. The other bloke just left it at that, good on him, I certainly wouldnt with some idiot shouting in my face. My lad asked him afterwards what he meant by that, and he said that because he was gay, the other bloke would be locked up for it. Now...anyone think thats right?

On the other hand, my best mate was actually attacked on a night out for being gay. Yes hes one of those in your face types, but its still not acceptable.

Goes both ways.

Vicky - I know one of those cases for definite was a homophobic attack. It was in Liverpool's gay district and they were shouting homophobic insults during it too.

Not sure about the other one.

Yeah I know it happens sadly.

But how do they police prove it was a homophobic attack if they werent there or there were no witnesses as such...only the persons friends?

Just seems they are too quick to slap a label on everything these days.

In this instance there were witnesses. It was definitely a homophobic attack in this case.

I agree in general though, we have to be careful not to call things a homophobic attack just on the basis that it's a gay man attacked.

Angry

That is so sad!
Pathetic excuse for human beings!
The law really should be tougher on homophobics, not trying to be mean, but, for some people, its the only way they can ever learn.
People are very homophobic where Im from, in Senegal. To be honest, I was, when I was much younger. BUt in this country? It really should never happen.

I just dont get people like this. They really must be lowlives if they attack someone based on their sexuality. They probably couldnt find another reason to attack them thats why!!

Of course we dont know what the full story is, it may be a story where the gay person provoked the youths... but that seems unlikely.

I just think people like this are pathetic human beings, and if they carry on like this, i guarantee it will bite them back in the arse and they will get in a lot of **** for it somehow.

The ironic thing is these people will say being gay is 'sick'.

As opposed to bashing someones skull in, which is completely healthy recreational phenomena, of course.

Is it perhaps just more reported than before?

These figures rarely have a level playing field. Like when they discovered that lots of asians were being stopped by police in Birmingham and then realised (much later) that between midnight and 6 am there were tons of Asians driving around in cars in the city centre and that was when the local police made most of their car stops!
