Maybe you would all like to see summary executions with no appeals?
The point is these harsher sentences seem indicative of political interference for party political reasons, a dangerous precedence in jurisprudence.

What we want to see is swift, harsh punishment to criminal activity that is a threat to every decent person, business and community in the country. Plus we want a strong clear message sent out that it will not be tolerated. So sick of bleeding heart liberals boohooing about harsh sentences whilst not even offering any alternative solutions. And I mean short term solutions because something needs to be done fast to stop it kicking off again. Hardline tactics are the only effective short term option right now. Indeed it took a hardline approach to finally squash last weeks mayhem of destruction. And the vast majority of the population are totally behind such strong retalliation. In fact, I think the bleeding hearts are being given way too much airtime. They are a tiny minority who are way out of touch with public mood. |

It is not a question of liberal agendas but the separation of the executive and the judiciary. The executive is being seen to be interfering with the judiciary for political gain, thus the executive is seeking to make capital of the disorder by claiming to get tough on those involved.
What comes next? The midnight knock on the door of those who do not vote appropriately? Remember when you go to vote, your ballot slip has a unique number on it which will tie to a list with your name on it. (All designed of course to address electoral fraud) As for what halted the epidemic, as indeed this is what it was, if you analyse it's spread pattern from ground zero, was the weather. It started to rain, and that kept people off of the streets, separated them, and it allowed the collective insanity perpetuated by a malevolent meme to subside. As for the public mood, that is being whipped up by elements of the right wing press with their own political agenda, perpetuating yet another potentially malevolent meme. This meme is even more insidious than that which caused the riots to spread, because it clothes itself with self-righteousness. It is the meme of vindictiveness, and this one does not look like it will be disrupted by a few drops of rain

"It's completely distinct from any other experience that I've had where police officers arrive and individuals ditch their weapons or run away.
should have shot them then.

That's quite some time but they'll learn their lessons.
