The series opened in October with eleven main characters: alcoholic landlady Carla White, her soldier husband Dom White (Dom took her maiden name), villainous gangster Andrew ‘Shark’ Thompson, ladies man Danny Carter, ditzy and loveable teenage twins Rose and Daisy Butterfield, secret and mysterious teenager Katy Edmonson, and a wealthy family the Whitings consisting of loveable grandma Barbara, her arrogant son Chris, his considerably younger and deprived of attention fiancé Janine and Chris’ teenage son Jamie, who is not Janine’s son. Whilst Dom was away on service, Carla grew depressed and craving attention, embarked on an affair with Shark. Ashamed, Carla convinced herself that Shark had raped her and worried that her pregnancy was a result of the ‘rape’…but Dom had been home in the same time frame to impregnate her. 7 months later, Dom returned from service and Carla was heavily pregnant, and he believed it to be his baby. Carla led him to believe this, and when Shark attempted to rekindle their affair, Carla informed him that he had raped her, and Shark believed her – as he had been drunk at the time. Nevertheless, Shark did not give up on his pursuit and become convinced that Carla’s baby was his, using any opportunity to get Carla alone and try and make her see sense. Carla contacted her former best friend Karen Fisher, who was currently living in Australia and had previously lived on the way with her family, and informed her that she was raped, and Karen assured her that she would be back soon to give her support.
Meanwhile, Danny was breaking hearts when he caught the attention of Rose, Daisy and Katy, who all ran the local sweet shop ‘Sweet Memories’ together – Rose and Daisy owning the lease but Katy putting most of the hours in. Elsewhere, Janine was getting increasingly frustrated that Chris did not give her attention and become the subject of Barbara’s hatred, when Barbara believed Janine to be unsuitable for Chris, and the pair clashed when Jamie testified in court against his ex-gang member Mitch for a robbery that had taken place earlier in the year. Janine realised she did not want to marry Chris, but once Barbara understood how much Janine meant to Chris, she forced to Janine to stay in the relationship. In November, Karen arrived with her husband Tom and her teenage daughter Freya. Freya instantly made an impression after she went on a camping trip with Danny, Rose, Daisy, Katy and Jamie and ended up overdosing on drugs that her dodgy father had given Jamie to sell. Tom clashed with Chris and Jamie because of this, and in a bid to protect his family, used his criminal connections in Shark to scare the men into silence about Tom’s drug dealing – and Tom also forced Jamie to split up with Freya, much to her upset.
Karen provided support for Carla in her time of need and become a local housewife to call on, completely oblivious to the fact that Tom was having an affair with her newly arrived sister Emma, which had been going on for 20 years! Tom had fathered Evie, Emma’s 14 year old daughter. In December, Carla’s troubles escalated when she give birth to her baby, a girl, whom she called Sandy, on the same night that Danny, Rose and Daisy went on a weekend away, with Danny and Daisy ending up drink driving which resulted in them knocking down and killing a teenage girl. Danny and Daisy covered up the death, and Danny carried on pursuing a relationship with Daisy’s sister Rose. Recovering from his break-up from Freya, Jamie fell into the arms of Katy, who Barbara realised was actually the daughter she had given up 20 years later after she was the product of an unwanted one night stand when Barbara had cheated on her husband Jeff. Barbara kept this to herself, however, despite Jamie and Katy actually committing incest as they were auntie and nephew. Janine become to develop feelings for Jamie, despite him now dating Katy, after he showed her attention, and the pair begun an affair behind Chris and Katy’s back throughout the month. At Christmas, Janine and Chris finally tied the knot but Jamie slept with Janine at the reception, which resulted in her executing her plan in leaving Digital Way behind with Jamie, and jilting her newly-wed husband.
As the way partied in Fusion to celebrate Janine and Chris’ marriage, Janine waited for Jamie in the empty Vine pub, unaware that tragedy was about to fall after Dom discovered Shark standing over baby Sandy’s cot and questioned him about what happened. Shark revealed that he could be her father, which resulted in Carla attempting to flee and grab Sandy, heading outside. Chris, in a present to Janine, who was missing (in the pub), donned a Santa costume and got on the back of a milk truck, being driven around the way on Christmas. As the driver got out for hot chocolate, Carla got in with her baby and frantically tried to escape the way in the milk truck, throwing Chris from the back and slipping on ice, causing her to crash into The Vine and resulting in Janine’s death. In January, the Whitings were trying to get over Janine’s death when Barbara’s estranged son Nate arrived, pretending her wanted to get back in contact with the family. Nate had been thrown out on Christmas Day 2003 after his late father Jeff discovered he was gay, and Barbara missed her son dearly. However, Katy suspected Nate had an ulterior motive and Nate eventually revealed he was being threatened by Jamie’s ex-gang member Mitch, who had now been released from prison and wanted Nate to hand over Jamie to him. Getting into contact with the police, the Whitings made a set up at Janine’s funeral which resulted in it going wrong and both Nate and Jamie being held at gunpoint by Mitch. Nate proved his worth when he took the bullet for his nephew Jamie, and whilst recovering in hospital grew support from his family. Jamie and Katy announced their engagement, whilst Carla and Dom were devastated when Baby Sandy was taken away from them by social services, but they get her back when they were allowed to move back into The Vine after it had been refurbished. Dom wanting to get back at Carla and lied and told her he had slept with Karen, prompting Carla to fight with Karen – with Dom admitting it was a lie afterwards. Emma arrived with Evie soon after, hell bent on causing trouble for Tom and struggling in Australia without the families support.
Nate met Ryan Thornton, who was moving to the way with his father Tony, who had been discharged from the police force after being injured by a gun shot wound. Tony was homophobic and believed Ryan to be straight, and Carla slept with Tony when she was drunk and feeling low following Dom’s confession, but the pair kept the one night stand a secret. In February, Jamie and Katy celebrated their engagement at Fusion but Barbara drunkenly revealed to the whole way that she was Katy’s mother. After confessing all to Katy at home, Katy viciously verbally attacked Barbara and left, which resulted in Barbara attempting suicide via jumping out of a window. In hospital, Barbara recovered and Katy was convinced by the rest of the family to see her and attempting to make their relationship work, but nevertheless couldn’t and they struggled – especially when Katy learned she had to cut off her relationship with Jamie also. Rose discovered the truth about Daisy and Danny’s hit and run cover up and decided to cover for them, but the pressure got to Danny and he ended up confessing, despite Daisy telling him she truly loved him. March saw the arrival of the Kapoor family, led by strong-willed Luna, his son with a gambling problem Rishi, Rishi’s wife Rachel, and Luna’s daughter Carmen, and they opened up a kebab shop called Sunrise on the newly opened Digital Parade. Their happiness was short-lived, however, when Luna’s strict and abusive brother showed up and began abusing the family, but not before Rachel left Rishi as she could not cope with his gambling problem anymore. Luna, Rishi and Carmen conspired to kill Hashee, and they did so, burying him in the garden drainage shaft. Ryan admitted that he was gay and in a relationship with Nate to a shocked Tony, who kept him in the cellar for a few days before seeing sense and leaving Digital Way himself – leaving Ryan and Nate to be together.
Daisy suffered an ectopic pregnancy in early April and learned it was Danny’s baby, so her and Rose decided to sell up as Digital Way was a bitter reminder of what they’d lost and left the way via a hot air balloon with friends Chad and Cole – who were also twins! Dom struggled with the pressure of Carla’s revelations when she revealed her string of her affairs and her lack of parenting skills, which resulted in him putting The Vine up for market when hitting financial strain was the last straw. Dom admitted his plans to leave and cruelly dumped and divorced Carla, planning to move abroad to run a bar in Majorca with his younger brother’s. Carla came to her senses and allowed Dom to leave with Baby Sandy, recognizing that he would be a better parent despite her secretly knowing that she and Shark were the real parents. Shark revealed that he had not raped Carla to Dom before he left, and they had in fact just had an affair. Shark’s brother Lucas arrived also in April as a date for Emma, who was trying to jealous Tom, whose interest in her was dwindling. Barbara’s estranged daughter Diane also showed up in April and proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with, getting involved with Shark and Lucas in the criminal dealings at Fusion nightclub. Diane and Lucas begun to sleep together under Shark’s nose, without him knowing. Meanwhile, the murder cover-up of Hashee was proving stressful to the Kapoors, and The Vine Inn needed new people behind the bar as Carla was left homeless…
