Default Big Brothers Big Profit!

News has come in recently that the 2013 collection of series from Big Brother (inc. Celeb) held an impressive £32.3 million in profit, well up from the previous 2012 collection of series, which held a loss at £16.6 million. 2013's series were clearly the show's most favourable since moving to Channel 5, beating near all records set from both 2011 and 2012 years in terms of ratings with Big Brother Secrets and Lies appealing to 1.9 million official viewers, meanwhile the Celebrity versions appealed to 2.2 million, which although less than the previous winter edition succeeded with the later edition at 3.0 million viewers.

How do you think the 2014 run went? + or - ?

Regardless to say, the £32.3 million in profit is significant for Channel 5, particularly considering it is the channel's most popular and some may say, valuable, show, and is strong in terms of C5's annual budget (before Viacom takeover) of £200 million.

Do you lot believe the 2012 loss of £16.6 million is a sigh of relief considering the channel went ahead with a further 3 series the year after, despite such a loss? And does this secure Big Brother's future for 2015 in terms of money?

Will keep this thread updated once the consolidated amount for 2014 is released.

2012 made a loss?

Not surprised that year of BB was a catastrophe.

BB12 and 13 was the bottom of the barrel.

This year will probably be down considering BB15 was the lowest rated civilian ever and CBB14 just saved itself from being the lowest rated celebrity. However, January's huge success could just about keep it afloat.

BB12 and 13 were both disastrous.

I'm not surprised that they made a loss during 2012 tbh, but the fact that they carried on with the show regardless seems like a good sign of their dedication to BB.

Apparently Viacom boss is giving a ruthless approach and won't be dependent on BB though.

That's a load of BS and poor reportage by fan sites.

They're not exactly dependent on BB now though are they? that have other shows that do quite well for themselves, maybe not on the level of BB but if they got rid of it now, it would still be a respectable channel in it's own right.

They'd be idiots to get rid of it though, it brings them their best ratings every night and consistently beats channel 4, which is one of the highly rated channels.

Should be pointed out that this isn't "Big Brother's Big Profit" - the figures you've quoted are for Channel 5 as a whole. C5 has never disclosed Big Brother's financial performance AFAIK.

It's not BS in the slightest - that C5 isn't dependent on Big Brother is pretty much exactly what the CEO of Viacom said. His words were: "Maybe we continue with Big Brother, maybe if for some reason that didn’t work out we have the ability to put out other great programming."

Well the Viacom chief doesn't seem to have any interest in Big Brother, he's said that it's up to the programming team (Ben Frow) whether or not they continue with it, but he's acknowledged that it doesn't make a difference whether they air it or not.
