You're right it is a very old word. Last time I heard it though it was'nt considered derogatory in some contexts but I suppose that has changed now.

I think his remarks to Alexander particularly were very offensive and I think he probably should have gone then.

Yep. In Jamaica is simply a child but in other contexts its used to describe a black child.

Again, he was removed for a constant breaking of the rules after a formal warning, and that includes the several offensive comments that he's made over the past few days. I used to call both my kids this when they were little.
Growing up in Africa It was used as a term of emdearment for little ones.

I dont remember it being derogatory either but I grew up in a Jamaican household where that word was used to describe kids and not necessarily black kids but it looks like its yet another word that has many meanings and in different contexts is considered offensive. When Ken said it on Saturday I was more shocked and surprised than offended.
