Scream 3:
7/10

I remember hating this movie but upon a rewatch, I think I've been a little harsh on it. It's not a patch on the first two, but it's a perfectly enjoyable film for what it is.

I have issues with how, at times, Scream 3 overdoes the comedy element that it managed much better in the first two movies. That said, it's not as overbearing as I remember. The voice changer thing also bothered me slightly, having exact replications of everybody's voices wandered a little too much into the realm of disbelief (even though it did provide some creepy moments like Roman using Cotton's voice when going after his girlfriend).

Something else I didn't love was the OTT final part with Roman when he won't die, it just looked silly. Not to mention having Sidney kill him would have been much more fitting and satisfying. On the subject of Roman, I actually like him as the killer and his motivation.

I also loved the scenes with Sidney in the recreation of her Woodsboro home, they were some of the more eerie scenes in the movie (along with Sidney being haunted by the memory of her mother, which was a really cool touch).

Yeah, it's not a classic but it's not half as bad as I always remembered it.

Rankings:
1. Urban Legend (9/10)
2. Scream 2 (9/10)
3. Scream (8/10)
4. Scream 3 (7/10)
5. Friday the 13th (7/10)
6. House of Wax (6.5/10)
7. I Know What You Did Last Summer (5/10)

Scream 3 (2000)

8/10

It's not as bad as it's made out to be, imo. Sure, it's worse than 1 and 2 but I think it's better than 4. I liked the Hollywood aspect as previously mentioned - it helped to reinvent the format of the movies and I liked the development the trio got (well, Gale and Dewey). It shows that they don't have to be apart of the group of people getting killed to be featured heavily (take note Scream 4 - the main 3 got about 20 mins of screentime between them?) and I LOVED Parker Posey as Jennifer Jolie. A genius creation who should have lived for the next film (although she would have had no place in Scream 4 so maybe scratch that) I loved the opening too, it helped tie some things together killing off a straggler like Cotton. I find the climax to be entertaining and the link back to Maureen Prescott and Roman actually being the cause of the whole 3 killing sprees was a great way to tie things together - it probably just fell a little flat. My main gripe with the film is besides Jennifer, none of the fresh blood is developed enough and just remain dull cannon fodder to keep us interested when they are killed. So yeah, because of that, I'm scoring it an 8.

The Descent

The best modern horror film out there. Me and my cousin went to see it in the cinema, it terrified her enough to make her jump out of her seat and slapped me when the first Crawler appeared. We both watched the rest of the film hiding behind our jackets. I still bought it on DVD and rewatched it to death because it's that ****ing good.

They take the fear of claustrophobia and turned it to the max. The introduction of the Crawlers is a great surprised and I love the fact they took a slow burn approach with them and not shove it in our face. If you have a heavy heart for a loss of a child and partner, the fear of being caved in somewhere that hasn't been discovered. Then the crawlers are the icing cake on this emotional ride.

The group of friends are great. All different but they're all there for support for Sarah, who's family had a tragic fate a year before. Turns out she's the strongest of the group as she fights for her life. Even more after finding out that her closest friend had a little sumthingsumthing with her former husband. Babe just can't get a break. One thing I can nitpick on... errrmmm nothing really. I even liked all the of alternative endings. I guess I just wished they didn't make a sequel because I like the thought of Juno dying in the first film.

It's a new classic that is required viewing for horror fans of all types.

10/10

Scream 3

Scream 3 is a film that felt extraneous and pointless back when it was first released and time has done nothing to make it anything more than the disappointment of the Scream franchise. In a lot of ways, Scream fell victim to a lot of the tropes it parodied in previous installments.

Scream has typically always had well realised characters but aside from the main three characters and Jennifer, I felt that most of the cast simply faded into the background. The Killer was also terrible and his reasons for doing so are pretty illogical and far fetched. The film had a troubled production and it's evident in the final product. It doesn't help that the film drags horribly despite being shorter than the previous films.

Thank god they redeemed themselves with Scream 4.

The Descent

Rating - 10/10

I'm glad this movie was in the selection as it's one of my favourite horror movies. It's one of the films that actually makes me jump(even if i've already watched it many times) The characters were great Juno is my favourite from this movie. The crawlers are scary af which is why this movie is iconic. Holly with a bone sticking out of her leg was gross but I loved it! It makes me scared of caves (fear). I still need to watch the second one.

The Descent

When it comes to horror films, The Descent is probably the best one I've ever seen. the setting and the monsters are both equally terrifyingm the characters feel realistic and well defined and they give the film a real sense of heart. Sarah's story and her journey through the film actually manages to be quite emotional which is something few horror films ever achieve never mind managing to be scary at the same time. The direction is also fantastic and it's shot amazingly well, there's very few horror films in which the location has unsettled me more than the monsters.

It's not only a great horror film but it's a great film in general, it makes me realise how truly awful most of the films (bar Scream 1&2) we've been watching have been in comparison. Also thank **** we've gotten a break from the slashers.

Night Seven - Scream 3

Obviously Scream 3 is a bit underwhelming compared to the first two but I still think it's actually a pretty decent film. There are quite a few aspects which are a little crap but I think it's definitely underrated and not actually that bad of a film.

The opening scene isn't as good as the opening from Scream 1 and Scream 2 but it's decent enough. However, I think on the whole in the film all the death scenes are pretty subpar and not memorable compared to some of the death scenes in 1 and 2 (Cici's, Tatum's, Casey's...). The death scenes in the film seem to not have as much build up as they did during the first two they seem to be pretty quick fire like there's no real chase scenes between any characters apart from characters who survived like Sydney and Gale.

Onto the characters in the film. They're pretty thin and have no background to them, they're practically transparent to be honest. I don't really remember any character from the film who were new additions to the franchise apart from Jennifer. Jennifer was a fantastic character and her rivalry with Gale provided great comedic value throughout, her pure delusion also regarding Gale being a preference to kill over herself was hilarious and I think Parker Posey who played her was fantastic.

Even though I didn't like the new characters in the film I think this is perhaps the best Sydney. I really liked her character this time round she was the feistiness and most daring we had seen her, I think Neve Campbell's acting from the first movie has improved also not that it needed doing but I think she was fantastic in this one and could perhaps be one of the best horror movie actresses I've seen. Her chase scene with ghostface on the set was an enjoyable scene with great tension. It was my second favourite scene just behind the final twenty minutes.

I think the film does feel a tiny bit repetitive at times. Especially regarding Gale and Dewey who appear to be going round in circles regarding their relationship. It just seems that maybe the producers are running out of ideas for fillers during the film.

However, I think the filmed really redeemed itself with the final twenty minutes during the film. I think the ending to the film is pretty much just as good as the endings to the first two if not maybe even slightly better! The killer reveal was fantastic and I think Roman's motive was believable and great twist as I never saw it coming, Sydney really shone during the last twenty minutes and I loved the final scene where she gripped her brothers hand after killing him. It felt like justice had finally been served and it was brilliant.

Overall score - 6/10

The good and the bad are pretty much on par for the film but because I love the ending I scored it a 6.

Score:

Scream - 10/10
Scream 2 - 9/10
Urban Legend - 9/10
House Of Wax - 8/10
Scream 3 - 6/10
I Know What You Did Last Summer - 6/10

The Descent:
8/10

The Descent is such an enjoyable horror film because it offers something different to a lot of the overdone, cliched horror scenarios seen so often. The bodies don't start to pile up until around halfway through the movie, but the preceding half isn't boring at all. On the contrary, the movie effectively builds a tense, claustrophobic atmosphere, so that when all hell breaks loose later, the effect is even greater.

The movie actually grabs you from early on, before they're even at the caves, when a happy opening to the film is suddenly shattered by the surprising death of Sarah's young daughter. I remember jumping out of my skin at this scene when I first saw this movie (and what makes it worse is that it's such a "real" tragedy that could happen in the real world), and I imagine it's even more unsettling for any parents watching.

One scene in particular that stays with me is when Sarah gets trapped in one of the tunnels and has to be helped by Beth. As someone who is terrified of being in that sort of situation, that scene really sets me on edge. And that's before the creatues have shown up at all.

Actually, as much as I enjoyed the whole movie, I probably would have loved a movie simply about a cave expedition gone wrong without the inclusion of the carnivorous creatures even more as my main area of interest in this movie is the claustrophobic setting and the very real perils that can arise there. That said, the creatures are definitely nightmarish and provide us with a lot of really effective scares when they start offing the cast.

The final scene in the movie is just haunting, as the camera pans away from an alone and hallucinating Sarah in the caverns. The US version apparently scrapped this and ended with Sarah seeing Juno in the car at the end of her dream, which I think is a real shame, the complete ending has such a larger effect. It's cruel to make you think Sarah got out, only to snatch it away with a final twist, but that's why it works.

I'd definitely recommend this to horror fans, especially those looking for something a bit different.

Rankings:
1. Urban Legend (9/10)
2. Scream 2 (9/10)
3. Scream (8/10)
4. The Descent (8/10)
5. Scream 3 (7/10)

Night Eight - The Descent

This film singlehanded has changed my view on British films. It is perhaps one of the best horror movies I have ever seen.

The opening to the film was great and didn't waste no time, Shauna MacDonald played the widowed role very well it was heartbreaking watching Sarah crumble to the floor being told her daughter had died as people just walked past oblivious, and I felt the sudden death scene was such a shocking element to open it but I think it worked very well and set the ambience for the rest of the film.

I think even though we didn't get to see the monster type predators until the last forty minutes, the director kept a lot of suspense throughout to keep the viewer intrigued. There were a lot of 'jumpy' moments such as when Sarah woke up and the pole vaulted through the window and the bats flying out the cave which left me wanting more and also very scared. I'd say this film is definitely the scariest I've watched so far from the list. I loved the scene were Sarah was trapped in the cave also, it had great suspense fuelled as did the scene were the girls were crawling over the abyss to the other side and Juno nearly fell. Holly's fall also like the other two scenes added to the eerie and 'jumpy' nature of the film, her leg break was disgusting.

I think the supporting cast in the film were particularly strong. Juno was my favourite character and the actress who played her was brilliant. I liked her loyal side but also her characters tough edge and determined nature. However, I felt all the actresses played their roles really well and there wasn't really anyone who stood out as being subpar to the others.

Once the creatures were introduced into the film it really got going. I felt the crawlers were horrific but the film was already scary enough with the whole expedition gone wrong vibes and the eerie atmosphere. Juno's fight scene with the crawlers was great and I was shocked when she killed Beth as a result by accident! The most shocking part though was Beth tearing off her necklace to reveal Juno's affair with Sarah's husband I was so horrified and shocked but it was a phenomenal twist. Juno's loyalty and love for Sarah is undeniable however and I still do think she is a true friend to Sarah but I totally understand that why Sarah in her hallucination would attempt to murder Juno because that's the ultimate betrayal. My favourite scene in the whole film though was when Sarah fell into the pool of blood and had her showdown with two of the crawlers it showed a new feisty side to her character almost releasing her inner Juno.

The final scene is truly chilling though, You've been lead to believe for a good twenty minutes/half an hour that Sarah is actually alive and well and has escaped the cave. Only for her to be having a hallucination involving her daughter while the crawlers scream around her. Truly frightening but also I have so much sadness in the final scene also.

Overall - 10/10

I've been too busy these couple of days so I'd figured to skip BC.

Black Christmas (1974)

9/10

Honestly one of the creepiest films (in my opinion) ever made. The calls are so disturbing and mystery of it all makes it even more terrifying. There is a lack of brutality in the film and you only see the killer once - and even then he is in the shadows, but it is honestly so suspenseful and creepy and keeps you on the edge of your seat. There are some disturbing elements to the film, including the killer imitating to be a cat from a girl's closet to entice her to open the door and eluding to the fact he killed a young girl called Agnes (although it isn't confirmed if they're related but it's inferred he's imitating his mother scolding him for murdering his baby sister). The main character, Jess, is well developed and you really feel for her and become terrified for her when she's the last one around and she sort of knows something bad is happening but can't accept it. Barb is an amazing feature as well - an amazing character whose provides some light relief and her death scene is one of the best aspects of the movie. The only reason the film drops a mark is because it needs tighter pacing - it's an hour and 40 minutes long but some aspects in the middle feel a little unnecessary (Peter's piano class/Jess being pregnant - but I suppose that adds to her character). Oh, and although some people may complain about the ending not actually answering any questions like who the killer actually was or whether Jess actually died (due to her being sedated and the killer leaving the attic - and then the phone ringing as a phone call always signifies a murder) but I think it adds to the ambiguity and charm of it. Overall, an amazing film and probably the best 'murderer in the house making phone calls to a girl downstairs' horror film out there which is why I'm awarding it 9 out of 10.
