The Strangers

The ONLY horror film to ever have freaked me out. It even inspired my username on here It's a realistic film because it could happen to you, that's what makes it so scary. The use of sounds in this movie are amazing (the music player, the thuds, etc.). Everything about it makes it the perfect horror film imo. The only reason i'm going to give it a 9 instead of a 10 is because I thought the ending was a bit lacking in something.

9/10

Oh I forgot to review Orphan.

Orphan is another horror film I really enjoy. Seen it about 4 times because although the twist is already revealed after the first viewing, it's still enjoyable because of the amazing acting and eerie atmosphere. I'd say it's a thriller more than a horror, but it's a great film with a great twist, a great ending and a great storyline, with great actors. (idk why i've used the word great so much i'm sorry )

The Strangers

I borrowed this movie from a friend after hearing numerous reports it was terrifying and one of the best home invasion horrors around, I watched it with an open mind but high expectations since people were raving about it.

It's safe to say The Strangers was one of the biggest dissapointments for me, I found it formulatic, boring and borderline comical when it is meant to be scary - I never even found the situation scary or creepy at all, none of the masked intruders were creepy, I found them dull and never cared why they decided the kill Steve Tylers kid or the other dude.

I find people claiming the movie was so well done and surprising yet two much better written and acted movies following the home invasion formula came out one year earlier - Vacancy and Inside.

If I am being generous, Liv Tyler was ok but she never once made me care if she died or not.

2/10

Wolf Creek:
8/10

Wolf Creek is so creepy because it's something you hear about and something you can imagine happening in some horrible scenario, backpacking through unfamiliar territory and finding yourself in a terrifying situation.

What happens to the girls is brutal and senseless, and all the more scary because the only reason it happened to them was because they happened to be there and got themselves caught in a psychopath's crosshairs. What's worse is how they were never found (agan, very true to life since many possibly-murdered people have just vanished) and how their murderer got away with everything.

It's bleak, depressing, and very effective as a scary movie grounded in reality (a very macabre aspect of reality).

The Strangers:
8.5/10

So, the premise of this movie is one of my biggest fears; malevolent intruders getting into your home with the intention of doing you harm. Being at home with the doors locked is when you're supposed to feel the most safe so the idea of the danger being within those walls is truly terrifying. And, like with Wolf Creek, it's a terrifying scenario that could very well happen.

Something I like about The Strangers is how it slowly generates tension and unease throughout the movie, I personally expected the couple to be captured earlier and most of the movie to be them being tortured / fighting for their lives. Most movies of this kind would go for that option so it was a nice move for this one to dedicate most of the movie to keeping the titular Strangers in the shadows, circling their pray, and to save the main attacks for the climax. This is a movie built on atmosphere rather than violence, and it's all the more effective for it.

I absolutely loved how the intruders would silently enter scenes in the background (sometimes with no musical cue to alert us to the danger). Very eerie (and the sort of thing I don't doubt would have people home alone constantly checking behind them).

The Strangers themselves are some of the most unsettling, nightmarish antagonists I've seen in a movie. Their masks are super-creepy, their whole MO of appearing and vanishing into the shadows is very effective in keeping you on edge and their motive (or lack of) for the attack ("Because you were home") is just downright horrifying. No rhyme or reason, these people are simply being hunted because they answered their door.

Because of all this, I think keeping their faces hidden even when they take off their masks is a good move. What makes them so scary is that we know nothing about them, revealing their faces would diminish that a little.

I think this is probably a marmite movie because some may feel that not a lot happens, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. One little thing that I didn't love was the final jump scare, I've said before in other reviews that I think it's an unnecessary and sort of cheap trope. But that doesn't spoil the rest of the movie for me.

Final Destination 3 (2006)

8/10

I think this movie is almost certainly the best in the Final Destination series. The premonition is definitely my favorite with the rollercoaster and the derailment scene is definitely HARROWING in it's true form. I like the characters - Wendy is a great lead and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is flawfree<3 Kevin is okay, I liked how they switched it up with Wendy and Kevin being the random two from the friendship group to survive the premonition. Ashley and Ashlynn's death in the tanning beds is definitely the most HARROWING scene in the entire franchise and definitely the most creative and horrific death. I like the twist with Wendy's sister being the unseen person who fell from the rollercoaster in the premonition. I also liked Ian turning into a villain kind of and the whole climax at the fair is very interesting. I LOVED the ending, definitely probably the best ending in the franchise also (besides the fifth one because of that amazing twist<3) The only grope Ii have with the film is that besides Wendy and Kevin - none of the characters are even developed and are just sitting ducks. Even Julie whose meant to be the third 'main character' is hardly developed. So yeah, that's why the score is 8/10.

I watched Wolf Creek yesterday

Wolf Creek
8/10 - The best Australian film i've seen, tbh. It had a Texas Chainsaw Massacre vibe I thought. The characters were all developed really well and overall it was a good film with some good gore

Final Destination 3
9/10 - My fav FD film, it's quite comical and I wouldn't really class it as a horror but it's really good and entertaining, I've literally watched it like 20 times, it doesn't get boring.

Wednesday 28th October - Candyman (1992)

Skeptical graduate student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) befriends Anne-Marie McCoy (Vanessa Williams) while researching superstitions in a housing project on Chicago's Near North Side. From Anne-Marie, Helen learns about the Candyman (Tony Todd), a knife-wielding figure of urban legend that some of her neighbors believe to be responsible for a recent murder. After a mysterious man matching the Candyman's description begins stalking her, Helen comes to fear that the legend may be all too real.

Thursday 29th October - My Bloody Valentine (1981)

A decades old folk tale surrounding a deranged murderer killing those who celebrate Valentine's Day, turns out to be true to legend when a group defies the killer's order and people start turning up dead.

Final Destination 3

It's kind of fun I guess but the truth is you can just watch the deaths on youtube and ignore everything else and you won't miss out. FD3 has inventive death scenes and little else.

4/10

Candyman

At first glance it's very much a 'Friday the 13th' to Nightmare on Elm Street's 'Halloween' but, unlike Friday the 13th, Candyman manages to become something unique and not just a pastiche of what came before. It's more than just a simple slasher and I appreciated the focus on storytelling over pure gore.

I think, like most horror films, it does lose it's way in the third act. Aside from that though, I enjoyed Candyman and thought it was pretty decent film.

My Bloody Valentine (1981)

7/10

I think this film is one of the better 80s slashers. It's engaging and fun with a good backstory with Harry Warden and the miners being trapped underground. Valentine's Bluff is a good setting, the launderette kill<33 The finale is a really cool setting with the teenagers going into the mine and it's very tense. The Miner was a really freaky killer and the kills are all inventive. Axel being the killer and being the son of the supervisor whom Harry Warden killed was an amazing twist and I liked how they used Harry Warden as a red herring (even though most slashers did used a maniac escaped from an asylum as a red herring). Yeah I liked Sarah but the film came off cheesy in some parts and the cast is really big which means hardly anyone gets developed which is why I'm scoring this film a 7.

Halloween (1978)

9/10

One of the best horror films ever made in my honest opinion. John Carpenter pulls this off with genius fashion. Michael Myers is truly terrifying and definitely my favourite horror movie icon. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Laurie Strode brilliantly and you really root for Laurie which sets this films above the rest as I feel a weak point in the horror genre is actually getting you to root for the final girls. I liked how they also set up Annie as a secondary final girl only to make her the first victim. PJ Soles also provides some brilliant light relief as Lynda - and of course Dr Samuel Loomis is amazing<3 Yeah, there's not much I can say about this film other than that it's certainly miles ahead of films of its time and the only thing that really feels dated is the girl's dialog in some places and the effects (Michael smashing the window with the wrench early on in the movie for example). So yeah, it only misses out on a point because of it's dated aspects and also it features 2 dog deaths .

Halloween II (1981)

8/10

This is actually an amazing sequel and I think underrated by fans. A lot of sequels seem to move on as if the original never happened besides the fact the killer is still included but this one follows on directly and just feels like an extended finale to the original film - making it fun throughout. It was good to see the town's reaction to the events of the first film but a major gripe with the film is how Laurie is barely used despite all the events going on being because of her - but I guess the filmmakers thought we already knew about Laurie from the first film and that's why they decided to only include her for chase scenes. I find the hospital very eerie and I don't really understand the problem people have with it being so empty - it's established it's a small town and it's the dead shift with only a few workers working. I think the kills were a lot more upscale than the first film which makes it more entertaining - Karen's face being burned off in the hydrotherapy pool was good but yeah I guess this film feels more like a standard slasher film whereas the first film was a masterpiece which is why it scores only 8 instead of 10. Also they hardly use Laurie except for the final 20 minutes.

I thought it was watchable but derivative of films that came before it. I liked the mine setting and the backstory but it mostly just reminded me of better slasher films.

Halloween
One of the grandfathers of Modern Horror, Halloween is an effective horror film first and a slasher second. The character of Micheal Myers is used really well, scenes when you see him watching Laurie from outside and stalking his prey are incredibly eerie. I like that his motives, in this film at least, are never mentioned. He's just a killer and like Laurie said, he's a boogeyman. I think the only problem with this film is that it's showing it's age which is understandable.

9/10

Halloween 2

Halloween 2 is when it all went wrong. I liked Micheal Myers more when he was a random psychopath, I think giving him a motive and a potential supernatural twist weakened the effectiveness of the character. I think the story ultimately feels extraneous and not needed. I think the fact that the characters, aside from Loomis and Laurie, are all incredibly weak when the cast of the first film was way stronger. It's basically like watching a bunch of extras getting killed off, you don't care and it's all pointless.

I also felt like the film disregarded the trendsetting of the original and instead decided to follow the trends of other slashers at the time by injecting more gore and overly elaborate kills into the proceedings when neither are needed.

I like to pretend that Halloween is a stand alone film for a reason.

4/10
