Default How does one go about learning how to fish?

I want to learn but where do you even go about learning this? Do they offer fishing classes?

Don't do it. It's stressful for the fish and unnecessary.

Yes, they do angling classes etc.
Google for your nearest one Benjamin.
Have a few lessons to see if you get hooked before you buy all the gear.

Maybe

I need to learn as I'm planning to hike from top to bottom of NZ for a few months, so want to get a few skills I don't have under my belt including this and mountaineering.

Yeah but I want proper fishing not in a lake where they are put there.

That's why I use liver, or some other bait now. I can't handle the worms.

Why don't you have a wander along your local canal as there are always anglers sat along the canal near me - get yourself chatting to one of them , they'll have a host of knowledge . Or go to a fishing tackle shop they'll help.
Good luck i'm sure you'll be a great angler.

You can dangle a maggot on the end of a line,
Or swallow a moth and put your tongue in the water....
It works just fine.

What type of fishing? if it's just a hook and bait or spinner then there's really nothing more to it than baiting your line and casting then waiting for a bite or attaching your spinner casting/reeling in and repeat.

I used to go fishing with my dad all the time but had to get him to bait my hook and I still go sometimes with my OH but only ever use a spinner if I go with him.

If it's fly fishing or sea fishing etc then I don't have a clue

I've only ever used to do lake fishing but it was good fun.. and really simple like Josy said. Just need a rod, hooks, some weights, floats, a net and plenty of bait and you'll be able to make a whole day of it. Sea fishing is pretty cool if you can catch your own food but it's always seemed pretty boring and hard to catch things.

I fish, usedx to do a lot of coarse fishing when I was wee and then spinners in the lochs for trout. When we go out annual golf holiday we go fly fishing on the rivers.

I catch and put back of course. If you rock up to a trout farm they will hire you a rod for like £20 for 2 hours and give you the basics there and then

Otherwise youtube will happily teach you

use spam, sweetcorn or bread as bait, get a telescopic fishing rod, easy to pack, and if you don't catch any fish, you can always eat the bread/spam
