To answer the OP - I think for men and for women it's a very defensive sort of thing to say that I think maybe comes from a place of not wanting to be seen as emotional on the one hand, or because they don't believe they'd be good with children so refuse to try and instead box that feeling away and give this nonchalant response instead. I used to say I didn't like kids and I wasn't bothered about having any. I still don't know if I'll have any, but I realise that I was being silly before because it was just this empty catchphrase of sorts to seem blokey and blasé. I guess maybe it's a selfish person's catchphrase. Bringing a child up is all about self sacrifice and saying you hate kids is a way of cutting that idea at the root and saying no, my life is about me and me only. So definitely plays into giving off a ruthless no holds barred appearance, especially on something like The Apprentice where you want to come across as in control and self assured... but I think it's actually a very insecure comment to make... |

It didn't faze me when she said that, and I don't think there's anything wrong with saying it. It's not like discriminating a minority group; as someone said, children won't always be children, and some people just can't tolerate traits that all children possess.

A lot of people don't like or want kids..then they grow a few years and change their minds.
Hubby never wanted kids, I handed him my baby niece once and he said he thought Puppies had a better smell and he would prefer a puppy. The most doting father ever once the kids landed of course. Last edited by smudgie; 27-11-2015 at 09:31 PM. |

With her it's probably "don't just treat me like I'm a hot piece of ass, I am not a piece of meat" type of attitude to survive the business world of pervs.

The problem with making that statement like that on popular TV is, it doesn't endear you to all those parents watching. Daft as it is, parents tend to take comments like that as a personal slight against their own kids.

I'm much more concerned about people who fawn over children and have to constantly remind you how much they love children. i'm much more judgmental of those people... to me when adults like children, it tells me they have serious issues and can't handle dealing with other adults. they have serious issues with power and control.
Children are stupid and obnoxious... that's a fact. dare you to name a child that wasn't/isn't... so people that prefer to spend time with children worry me.

I dote on my kids - still, even though they are not 'kids' anymore. I remember the time I was in tears when my middle child was seriously ill in intensive care and I begged God to take me and let him live, and my uncontainable elation when he recovered . I remember the frustration of wishing I could take the pain of teething from them when they were helpless babies. And I remember holding them and knowing that my absolute love for them was the most natural thing in the world. None of my kids were ever 'stupid' or 'obnoxious' and they have repaid my devotion to them and any sacrifices I made a thousandfold, by growing up into decent, kind and caring intelligent young adults.

You said it perfectly I never thought I wanted children, but I most certainly have never hated or disliked them. In hindsight, they are probably the only worth thing I will do in life.

I spent many years trying to have a child but I would never have judged someone who said they didn't like / want children, I just knew I did. My own mum wasn't maternal in the slightest, she loved me and my brother but never fawned over other people's kids or wanted to hold babies, until her grandchildren came along.

I think that people fixate on their kids a bit too much, they are like tiny celebrities and during visits all eyes are on them.
Pfft... put them on the kids table and have an adult conversation! Have you seen secret lives of 5yr olds?.... they are perfectly capable of rationalisation and complex conversations, don't be fooled people!!

i feel like my comment has been unfairly interpreted by most of you.
dealing with children is a chore. it's NOT fun, it's not cute, it's not enjoyable looking after children MOST of the time. Children are a pain in the ass.

I agree with that, I don't want anymore children, I've done my time lol and I don't love babysitting but that doesn't mean I dislike children, I just don't want to be responsible for any There's a difference between disliking children and disliking looking after children imo

I love looking after my nieces... but, and it kind of shames me to say this, it's wonderful when they're all tucked up and looking (deceptively) like little angels or blowing me kisses through the rear window of their parents' car.
