Default Woman in her 80s shot dead at care home...

Police arrested a man on suspicion of murder after female pensioner found dead at 'luxury' retirement home

Police have launched a murder inquiry after a woman in her 80s was shot dead at a care home.

The pensioner was declared dead at the scene, at Delamer House in Naze Park Road, Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex Police confirmed.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Emergency services were called to the home just after 9am following reports that a woman had been seriously injured, police said.

Officers and ambulance crews attended but the woman, believed to be in her 80s, died. She is believed to have been shot, police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Werrett, who is leading the investigation, said: "At this stage we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation and our inquiries are ongoing."

A scene guard has been put in place at the premises while forensic searches are conducted.

I can't imagine wanting to be 80 and living in a care home. Could it be some sort of mercy killing?

Well considering it sounds like she was badly injured and died a little later, it doesn't sound particularly merciful.

Also, not all elderly people in care homes wish are miserable and waiting to die.

I feel bad for a small part of me thinking "I'd rather go dramatically like this than slowly waste away" but yeah... that's awful

And the answer to that is to shoot them dead?

Sorry, I find the notion of even trying to validate this as a reasonable (even benevolent) action to be bemusing.

What's the point in murdering someone in their 80's? Not that murdering a young person is the way to go, I'm just saying... you could just... wait?

It says in the article it was another resident, so nothing to do with Wills or money, a mental issue maybe?

a gun seems a bit extreme, couldn't he just spread some cooking oil on her bathroom floor?

My great grandma spent her last years there so I know the area relatively well, and I can safely say this is the most interesting thing to have ever happened in Walton (but yeah, it's pretty awful, RIP, etc)

I wonder what else you can have on you in a retirement home on account of simply being old

he apparently only arrived at the care home a week ago. If I was a betting man, I would say it was a pre-planned act

Had a read of this now, it looks like he was staying with his wife in the home over Christmas, she was suffering from Alzheimers, so yeah looks like pre planned due to the stress if it all.

It seems he was trying to end her suffering, couldn't he have just put something in her tea so she slipped away :/
Not condoning murder as such but can such a violent end be considered a 'mercy killing'?

This is so sad.
He booked in for a week, looks like it is a husband that couldn't stand to watch her suffer any more.
Perhaps if it hadn't been a gun, which is so violent, then people might understand more how you can love somebody so much you want their suffering to end.
