Just finished. I'm so glad someone suggested this film

Spoiler:

Well, it was a John Hughes film so you can't really go wrong in that regard, and overall the film lived up to expectations and was very enjoyable. I loved Andie as a character and her relationships with most of the others (her dad, Duckie, Blane (who I found oddly attractive), Iona). I can't really say who my favourite person was but I really liked them all in different ways (except the assholes but obviously we weren't supposed to like them ). Iona was a really fun character, and I loved how quirky and cool she was. Duckie was adorable although I did find him a little weird at the beginning, but then when it was revealed that they were friends for 8 years so their relationship made a lot more sense to me, lmao.

The class-divide being an integral part of the film also came across very Romeo and Juliet, and I'm really pleased that Andie and Blane got a happy ending (). I understand why people would want Duckie and Andie together, but I love them as friends and only friends. Also, what types of people would you call the two sides? Like, is it preppy and alternative, or was there another name for these groups of people? I'm not as much into American sub-culture as I'd like to be.

I kind of wish the mean girls got more of a comeuppance, but oh well. I suppose the main douche's story arc came full circle so that's good enough for me. It was also quite strange that Andie's high-school friend just dissapeared after 30 minutes of the film.

I would give this film a 7, almost an 8. The costuming was a fantastic highlight, very cool and trendy especially on Andie and Iona's behalf (and Duckie at the prom ). I don't think this is as good as The Breakfast Club, but I can definitely see why this film is considered a classic. I definitely need to watch more John Hughes films as I haven't seen Sixteen Candles, St.Elmo's Fire or Weird Science. Actually, after looking up his films there's so many I haven't watch, and I didn't even know he produced Home Alone (I haven't really watched that either ).

Can't wait to see what next film wll be

..Pretty in Pink...

Spoiler:

..an enjoyable second watch..(thank you for the choice, Ruby....Molly Ringwold was such an endearing 80's actress and portrayed teenage angst so well...I can understand Jon's 'stalker-ish' feelings about Duckie but I think that it was important to the story to portray him that way to show the reverse type snobbery as well../that he resented Blane so much for winning Andie's heart, the 'richie' who had everything, why should he have Andie as well but obviously realising in the end that Blane was a nice guy and indeed worthy of Andie's love and he was what would make her happy...as she said to her dad, if she judged the richies for having money, then she would be doing what they were doing in their judgement of those who didn't have...

..I loved Annie Potts as Iona and Harry Dean Stanton as Andie's dad....a great cast, a cute movie, an excellent soundtrack and a very nostalgic 7/10.....

Spoiler:

After reading others reviews i wanted to add that i also loved Iona and her wacky style, especially her spikey punk hairdo, and wish Andie's friend had been in the film more as she seemed a great character, i thought her relationship with her dad was something special, i don't know how i feel about her ending up with Blaine, i'm glad she didn't end up with Ducky as it was obvious she had no romantic feelings towards him, and if she'd have ended up with him then it would be her sticking to 'her own kind' which i hate the thought of that, but then ending up with Blaine after he'd judged her not good enough for him also sat uncomfortably with me, even though he was reacting to his so called friends advice/ultimatum. He realised his friend was just being a twat because he'd wanted her and she'd rejected him, so he actually came to his senses and followed his heart, as she followed her heart and in the end it was great to see Ducky letting her go, meaning he truly loved her as all he wanted for her was her happiness

And also can't wait for the next movie

I'm really loving this club tbh

I really like watching films but I'm so indecisive when it comes to choosing what I want to watch. Like, I've wanted to watch Pretty in Pink for a while because it was on Netflix, but always want to wait for the right moment if that makes sense?

It's kinda nice rt? I probably would never have watch Usual Suspects either... And getting everyones opinions is lovely to. Also just doing something different with a new group of people on here and getting to know them better...

I didn't know Ruby and I had daughters the same age

2001 was a great year

I love getting to know you all better too, and it's great to know there are other mums on the forum with teens so that we can share our angst

I love the fact that this forum has a great age variation, as it adds to my experience by looking at differing view points and opinions.

I would never have watched Usual Suspects either, so it's great to be part of a club where we can all choose a film, watch it and report back

Yeah, I forgot to add that I'd always wanted to watch The Usual Suspects too. It is really lovely, I feel that this a really nice and social part of the forum. I hope it continues for a long while.

It's one of my favourite parts of the forum right now

And yes to The Fly being added to the list. I've seen it a few times so I'll have a lot of fun watching it again and reviewing it and seeing what everyone else thinks

Yes!!! I remember having to watch this in a social sciences course at university

It's an excellent film for many reasons, not only for the nature vs nurture and debate over DNA manipulation, but at the time it was quite cutting edge.
I am in

I would like Jons choice of The Shining, just because i've only seen bits of it (and i have it on my movie package) plus never seen the whole film!

Otherwise if it is The Fly you'll have to let me know a safe site where i can watch it for free
