They could have done it in a past film or made another one. But they chose to do it in the most talked about Disney film in ages that is why i feel they have done it for some kind of stunt/publicity then put any actual thought process into it. It would be nice to see it happen to a character we could see grow not one of the side characters

But it adds extra publicity which will likely turn into more tickets being sold which = loads of money

Theyre not really though, considering Disney isnt aimed at an adult audience. If anything, theyre a decade early. Which is excellent.

I disagree, if anything it will lead to less ticket sales by people protesting

But shouldnt children be taught that there is nothing wrong with being different to everyone else in school as soon as possible?

Like it's been said before, why would they need a publicity stunt when BatB is probably the most hyped film being released this year? Little steps are better than nothing, a gay side character is better than having no gay characters at all. |

I think, for now, theyre just trying to normsalise it. Make it less taboo.. therres been gay references in past disney films and the less subtle they get, the more normal it becomes.

I doubt people who wouldn't have normally went, will go just cos there's a gay disney character in it so no extra sales because of it but they will have people, alot of people too I think, not just in countries like Russia, who will refuse to "expose their children to that" jeez large areas of bible belt America for example and Russia is a huge country too btw, that's a big loss in sales right there alone

The "Gay agenda!! Think of the children!!" people exist in all countries, this will absolutely alienate some of the audience. It will still do well because it's a hugely anticipated movie though, not because it has a gay character.

It will have an effect on sales, there's a lot of 'family' and religious organisations in countries like the US that will opt for boycotts and such. It'll still be a rampant success but having a gay character will affect sales even in the most progressive of places.

Exactly so when it gets to the point that a gay character is at the centre of one of their movies it isn't a left field shock out of nowhere. They're slowly making it part and parcel of the Disney world as it is in the real world.

The only problem I have with this is the character they chose. It could easily have been Lumiere, or Cogsworth, but instead the "very first gay" is an obsessed, pathetic sidekick to the villain. Thanks for the bone, Disney?

Without sounding like a know it all either I've knows quite a few gay guys who experienced being attracted to their best mates in school and having secret crushes on their friend. It's a nice inclusion imo.

Beastiality and loving the undead is cool in Hollywood according to stuff like this and Twilight.

ps the character of Gaston was invented by Howard Ashman in the first place to be inherently gay (based on the idea of trade), so while I do agree that the whole "beta villain is gay for the alpha villain" idea isn't as progressive as Disney makes it out to be, it was all there in the original

Well this sucks. I'm so happy that gay characters are surfacing in children's films. Honestly, growing up, gay people were nowhere to be seen anywhere in children's entertainment - I didn't even know that being 'gay' was a thing till I was bout 7 probably? And that's really wrong.
