It's diesel AND petrol they're talking about Arista. A full switch away from fossil fuels. And they're not talking about banning them from 2040... It would just be that no new petrol or diesel vehicles would be manufactured past that date. Probably very few on the road by 2060. Think I'll be on my way out by then, anyway .

My wife's grandad claims every year that he "won't see next Christmas", been doing it since before I knew her! A woman I work with's husband has also "had 3 to 6 months to live" (doctor's prognosis) for the last 8 years . So, you never know!

Gives huge room for innovation now for electric cars etc, maybe we'll actually see flying cars in the future.

Fortunately, our old combustion engines won't go to waste... There will be plenty of countries in Asia, Africa, South America who will have neither the economy nor the inclination to cut emissions who'll probably buy them all up. It's a good thing, but we're such a small country I fail to see how this is going to help.

I suppose it'll directly help the inner-cities with cleaner air but, as you say, on a global level there are still going to be more and more combustion engine vehicles year-on-year for the foreseeable future, not to mention air travel, so it'll make very little difference to overall air pollution .

Also, modern cars already run much cleaner anyway... one dirty old van is pumping out ten times or more pollution than a 2017 car using any fuel type. The sensible thing to do would be to start there, with all the old vans / trucks / lorries / buses... get rid of those and our cities will be much cleaner. Betty's 3-door diesel hatchback really isn't doing much.

Hm. As of now the only running costs for Bulbasaur (my Nissan Leaf) is insurance, as you don't pay road tax on electric cars, and I charge her for free at a charging point. If all cars are electric, I doubt that'd stay the same, so I'll say no thanks. Environmentally speaking, there's little point in taking steps like that anyway, unless China and India cut down their pollution.

It would be impossible for it to be free, and also, I'm not sure how they plan to address the fact that the UK grid doesn't produce anywhere near enough electricity to be charging over 30 million electric vehicles .

There's no such thing as a 100% clean car, until we are running the country on 100% renewable energy. If a car is plugged into the electricity grid to charge, then it is running on electricity generated by fossil fuels / nuclear energy 85% of the time, because that's where 85% of our electricity comes from.

It's mostly seabirds out there, right? They don't have thumbs so would need a car you just have to steer.

most people have wind turbines and solar panels so the electricity is free and as distances are short its the perfect combo

I don't like the use the term "virtue signalling" but that's what this policy sounds like. By the time 2040 rolls around, there could be any number of reasons this won't either able to or be needed to be enacted.
