The leg room sounds good as not too tall. My main concern is jet lag but I have been reading up about it and know your advice is sound. I read that if I can sleep on the plane to fit in with the time zones in Australia, arrive early morning, that would help.
I'd go to Burj Khalifa. Its not that far from the airport, though the traffic in Dubai is heavy going. Burik Khalifa is a spectacular building with breathtaking views. If you don’t want to go up the tower and you won’t be able to do that if its late at night, you will still be right in the heart of downtown Dubai which is a great place for good food, shopping, entertainment and the Dubai Fountain. No problem getting a taxi, they are everywhere but make sure you get one with a meter and make sure you have some local currency.

I'm not against taking a diazepam on a long haul flight. Its my only guarantee of getting a decent sleep!. I've had to do so much research about sleep and one of the interesting things is, when its light outside, its been scientifically proven that our bodies metabolism changes and gets more energy. You have to literally con your body into believing its night time and you can do that with things like earplugs and a decent eye mask.

It's a huge aircraft...but when you are on it you could be on any other aircraft whatever cabin and oblivious to the fact there is another level above or below.

Sounds like good advice - might take some diazepam myself. Also like the idea of earplugs and an eye mask. Got to sleep!

I have been reading about the Irish Village which is apparently near the airport so may give that a try. Would prefer it if it is within walking distance of the airport though, don’t really want to rely on taxis in an unfamiliar country at that time of night.

Spend your time at one of the souks to buy souvenirs! But if I got really tired, I can't sleep sitting down, then I would just find a place to sleep!
The souvenirs are really cheap...
If you want to visit the Burj Khalifa, book your tickets in advance, I did it and it worked, because all the slots get sold out if you buy on the spot...
