Default Its a Scottish £5 note.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/234198...-legal-tender/

This really infuriates me, so much so that i often bring dozens back down the road with me after a visit home to scotland, just so i can argue the toss with people.

May as well jump in with my size 10s and say that in this instance its the foriegn workers lack of knowledge on legal tender thats at fault.

Any stories to share on this never ending news story.?

I know shops should take them and I do in work but in fairness some may never have seen one so could believe they are fake.

No need to swear and attack people who work on tills. Blame them not being trained well enough.

I was down in Engerland at the weekend for an elderly relative's birthday - paid at the bar with a Scottish tenner. The guy serving can't have been older than 20 and looked like the type who has barely left his home town his entire life let alone the country. He did take it to be fair, but he stared at it like it was an alien artifact for a full minute at the till .

Your shops are pathetic, at least we have the opportunity to stir it up a bit. Like, leaving trails of overflowing shopping trollys from berwick to brighton for some heaving, too fat for her uniform shop worker to deal with.

I bet she would have accepted them

Tbf this was quite a while ago when the notes were new so not surprising they hadn't seen it before. They're not obliged to accept them either. From my experience a lot of fake notes people try are Scottish or Irish ones because they know staff will be less familiar with them and less able to spot a fake (not that people would bother faking fivers)

Any retail worker who can't spot a fake note in seconds is incompetent in my opinion. I also facepalm at the use of those UV light machines / testing pens.

I have seen a lot of fake notes. I've never seen a convincing one... ever... If its not immediately obvious by sight (most of them are atrocious) then it's obvious as soon as you touch it.

It's sort of part of the whole doing your job thing though, they'll probably get found out for having accepted it

I've seen a couple of okish ones, would expect anyone with more than a couple of months experience to realise but not necessarily a brand new starter or a 16 year old weekender. And that's kind of the thing with Scottish notes, even if someone doesn't think it seems right they might think 'ah maybe thats just how Scottish money is' or be intimidated into taking it if the person reacts like the bloke in the OP

The intimidation part is very true I suppose, I've seen people take notes they knew were fake to avoid trouble with people getting loud / verbally aggressive.
