Default All 25 year olds should be given 10K 'inheritance' says think tank

1 02-04-2018 16:05
All UK-born citizens should be given £10,000 as a “universal minimum inheritance” when they turn 25 to help address growing wealth inequality, a thinktank has proposed.

Tax reforms and a selloff of assets including the government’s stake in Royal Bank of Scotland could help create a citizens’ wealth fund worth £186bn by 2029/30, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) said.
Such a fund would give everyone a stake in the economy and help young people invest in their futures, for example through buying a property, investing in education or starting a business, according to a report for the IPPR Commission on Economic Justice.

The fund could be large enough to pay all 25-year-olds a one-off capital dividend of £10,000 from 2030.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics...says-thinktank

Edit to add link to the IPPR policy paper:
https://www.ippr.org/files/2018-04/c...march-2018.pdf

Is this the worst idea ever? and 2030 so no one on here will get it...

I don't think it's necessarily a terrible idea, though I think 25 is a little young, and 30 would probably be better. Though tbh a guaranteed £10k specifically towards a house deposit or to pay off a chunk of education debt would probably be better, rather than cold hard cash.

My main concern I guess, would be people simply running up a "risk free" £10k of debt knowing that they'll be getting a lump sum to pay it off.

(a) put a deposit down
(b) towards starting a business
(c) education
(d) pay into their pension...lol

they wont be getting cold hard cash thankfully

There would be ways round that, and loopholes, I'd have thought.

Silly idea.
Shouldn't depend on their age, a thirty year old deserves the same help.
Plus it should be means tested, giving all the little Lord Flaunteroys a handout is pathetic, the same as taxing working pensioners more, if pensioner had enough to live on then more wouldn't work in the first place.

Of course it is. Every generation has its well off and its poor so this generation would not be equalling anything - they would be getting preferential treatment. Our NHS is in crisis and they want to just hand 25 year-olds a bunch of money. Won’t happen of course! They can dream though.

By 2030 £10K will not pay the deposit on a Dog Kennel. These 'Think Tanks' need to think harder and longer or stop thinking altogether.
