I'm watching it this weekend, but it received mixed reviews and critics were ripping it to pieces.
It's got a 39% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. |

I tend to pay attention to critics if they are ones I trust to have similar tastes to my own and most of those I listen to have said that it's bad while the more positive ones have said it's mediocre but watchable.

I read the reviews after the movie, i still see "so and so gets mixed reviews" but that doesn't really stop me from going to see it.

Yeah it's not great and probably wouldn't be in my top 20 films, it was messy looking back but i still enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the second one though (probably won't enjoy seeing loads of girls dressing up as Harley Quinn for halloween again after that movie comes out )

I was disappointed with Leto's Joker tho. Although he did have massive shoes to fill.

I don't know why i'm surprised with this getting bad reviews, if you remember Tony i predicted it would do well with the critics and box office.
Why can't they get the dark phoenix right? it's embarrassing ****ing up up twice now.

I don't see Marvel doing the Phoenix storyline at all.

This was okay but we could have done without it. The pacing was quite off and some of the character development left a lot to be desired. Chastain’s alien thing just seemed a bit... meh? Jean Grey practically cries throughout. It definitely felt different in style but Days Of Future Past reigns supreme.

I just can't see it being relevant given the inevitable upcoming reboot . Feels like fan fiction or something.

It's quuuiiiite good, a few shades over "just okay". It's a better movie than Captain Marvel, and didn't have the spergs going on about how it's female fronted, it simply is.

My main gripe now though is that I'm also rewatching Agents of Shield and in S1 (when Hydra has revealed itself), Coulson states quite clearly that "Fury recruited him himself when he was just a kid, fresh out of high school". ... And in Capt. Marvel, Fury refers to Coulson multiple times as being new to Shield... Assuming Coulson is roughly the same age as the actor who plays him, he's currently 57. CM is set 24 years ago, making Coulson in his early 30's in that movie. Which you could argue is about how old the digitally de-aged character looks; So it all fits except that AoS line about him meeting Fury fresh out of school . Why was he finishing high school aged 33? Though to be fair... it didn't really make sense that someone would be snapped up by something like SHIELD at 18, and actually makes much more sense that he'd have been a new recruit in his 30's, coming from another agency like the FBI or summat. So that's an AoS plot hole rather than a Capt. Marvel one. Note: None of this has anything to do with Dark Phoenix. #Derail # 5yearAwardsPostWhereWeWant |

I thought Captain Marvel was fine, one of the weaker MCU offerings mainly because it felt like a wannabe feminist film that was written by a man who didn't understand what feminism is.
Carole has no flaws and the only 'flaws' they give her in the script are said by characters telling her she's too emotional when she seems to be under control at all times. I always compare Captain Marvel to Wonder Woman because that film had a way better understanding of feminism in a way that neither belittled the movement or the audience of the film. Diana is flawed but strong and she has to deal with sexism and attitudes that undermine her and she does so by simply excelling and proving the men who doubted her wrong, teaching them a lesson and extending a hand of friendship at the same time. Captain Marvel presents feminism as an 'us and them' situation but Wonder Woman's approach works better because it's emphatic and it makes a point of saying that neither gender can excel at the cost of the other as neither Wonder Woman or Steve can save the day alone. Wonder Woman's just an excellent film tbh. |
