Default Mothers demand climate action in London Protest

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-...form=hootsuite

Thousands of mothers and their families have staged a march in central London to demand action on climate change.

The Mothers Rise Up protest was led by eleven 11-year-olds to represent the deadline of 2030 for tackling global warming, set by the United Nations.

The march, which began near Hyde Park Corner and ended at Parliament Square, was held in support of youth strikes nationwide.

Similar marches are taking place across the country and internationally.

Rosamund Kissi-Debrah, whose daughter Ella suffered a fatal asthma attack believed to be linked to air pollution, addressed the rally.

"If you deal with air pollution it means you will also deal with climate change", she said.

"Everyone here needs to be bothered about the impact of air pollution. My daughter died a very, very horrible death.

"If you live near a main road you should be angry. I'm too heartbroken to be angry."

A 2018 report said it was likely unlawful levels of pollution, which were detected at a monitoring station one mile from Ella's home, contributed to her fatal asthma attack.

TV presenter Konnie Huq, comedian Shappi Khorsandi and lawyer and activist Farhana Yamin also addressed the crowds at the rally.

Ms Huq told the crowds that the march had been organised by mothers in between changing nappies and dropping children off.

She added: "The reason we are here is because of the youth strikes - the young people have been putting us to shame and it's time for us adults to take responsibility."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced on Saturday that he has commissioned Public Health England (PHE) to carry out a review of the impact of dirty air on the nation's health.

"This review will help us map out how much disease is caused by dirty air and what steps we are taking to prevent this - something which is at the heart of our work to help people live longer, healthier lives through the NHS Long Term Plan."

Exactly , arista it's all well and good protesting about these things and demanding changes , but how many of us are guilty of adding to these problems , most of us drive , use plastic , waste food , baby wipes and nappies are a major problem, so we all need to do our bit , not standing out there protesting and blaming everyone else . Actions speak louder than words.

I doubt they are stupid and ignorant, I am sure they are well aware of climate change and we have at least put things in place, but you cannot just blame other people, if someone throws a plastic bottle or bag into the sea , that is not the governments fault, its the lazy sod who couldn't be arsed to find a bin. the blame game will not stop climate change , getting off our arses and doing something constructive will, not standing in some city shouting about what we want.

going on and on about brexit, when there's other problems out there

brexit is unnecessary, a healthy climate is necessary for us all to live in

I think we all know a healthy climate is necessary ,how do you propose we do that ? as for Brexit of course it's necessary when people have voted for it, it would have been sorted ages ago had others who don't want to leave kept blocking it . People seem to think being the PM is easy , it's not. This is not about Brexit anyway it's about climate change. This was happening way before Brexit anyway.

i don't know myself how, but bad climate i think is mostly caused by poisonous gasses from cars, airplanes, buses, motorcycles and also nuclear power plants

however some of these things are necessary such as nuclear power plants to provide people with electricity

so i don't know the solution to this climate problem myself

Awww I think it's nice, all the girls having an outing. They obviously don't work, they've driven their husband's 4x4 up to London for they day, they'll probably make a picnic of it! Hope they don't leave all their single use plastic bottles and carrier bags behind this time.

Meanwhile, I'll continue recycling, reusing, relying on my solar panels and water meter, taking the train instead of driving and everything else I do to help. The same as most of us do. I believe these protests are a misplaced vanity project. Perhaps they can choose to wander past some of the embassies of countries who are the worst polluters?

Holland is a low-lying country, perhaps you'd like to tell us what your own stupid, ignorant parliament are doing to make sure you don't end up below sea level?

How can parliament stop unscrupulous people emptying their filth into the oceans , plus ,what about all the plastic ? whatever rules are in place lazy arses don't care and will break the law , I mean look at the litter still dropped, it's up to each and everyone of us not just governments . Until we ALL take some responsibility , nothing will change.

we keep our front and back garden clean, also the street area in front of our house we keep that part clean

protesting is nice to bring this under the attention cause we must be aware of this but you're right we ourselves must all do our share to keep our world clean

Like I said before, maybe protest in front of the embassies of the worst offenders? You have to acknowledge the work that is already being done while asking for more to be done.

Why are people getting so offended by people wanting to tackle global warming/the environment?

Last time the eco warriors disrupted the capital they left a sea of rubbish behind them, plastics mostly. Marching through London with a banner isn't going to stop China dumping plastic into the sea, destroying coral reefs by a myriad of measures, being the biggest market for illegal ivory and rhino horn... I think the UK is doing a lot to combat global warming and individually I think people are awake to the fact that we all have to help. I think that it alienates those of us who do what we can for the environment for people to march when the sun's out and not take their crap home with them... and then have them held up as heroes.
