Do you think there is a time when old people should stop getting drunk?

Erm no. If its what they enjoy then

Obviously if it stops being safe for them to drink then its slightly different, but even then, still their choice. I know I wouldn't give up my vices once I hit a certain age just because they are deemed more dangerous for whatever reason

My mother in law has actually just given up drinking entirely, not touched a drop in 5 months now. From being a raving alcoholic for like 40 years. Just quit overnight. Because shes been put 'on tablets' and has convinced herself that its really really dangerous and many die from drinking when on meds. Obviously its not ideal, but, shes gone way too paranoid. However, its a great thing for her, docs have been saying to stop for years now so I am not going to tell her her 'fears' are over the top when its resulted in this.

I was actually concerned about withdrawal from the alcohol her body was dependant on, but she got nothing worse than a few days of headaches and a bit of a sore stomach. Luckily. I hear alcohol withdrawal can be a bitch..

Also what’s the point drinking to the point that you are falling over.

She is right to stop drinking on top of medication, drinking on top of some meds makes one drink the equivalent of three.

Well yes on some meds. She has been put on 8/500 cocodamols though, the ones you can just buy OTC. So..something thats not really dangerous, especially not to the extent she thinks! Been a good thing overall though, so happy with the result

My grandma used to walk around the old folks home holding a pill bottle full of wine. She wasn't fooling anyone but herself... the staff all knew. She grew up in Italy and never went a day of her life without some wine that I know of... and she wasn't hurting anyone so why not??

not everyone who drinks chooses to go out and get legless regardless of age. I would suggest that anyone that does that is being irresponsible no matter what age they are.

Yes that is my train of thought, but with age comes experience, so those that do it regularly need to get a grip.

Our local paper gives a brief list of local court cases, like drink driving offences, gives the persons name and age.

Too many older people still getting banned for being well over the limit.
