Default Whoop Goldberg: Slut Shamer? Victim Blamer?

Quote:
Bella Thorne has called out Whoopi Goldberg for her reaction to the actor leaking her own nude photographs online.

On Saturday, the 21-year-old decided to “take the power back” by releasing her own topless photographs on social media after a hacker threatened to go public with the images.

“U don’t get to take another thing from me. U can’t control my life, you never will [sic],” Thorne wrote in an open letter on Twitter.

On Monday’s episode of the ABC daytime talk show The View, Goldberg criticised Thorne’s decision and seemingly blamed her for taking nude photographs in the first place.

“If you’re famous, I don’t care how old you are. You don’t take nude photos of yourself,” Goldberg said.

“If you don’t know this in 2019, that this is an issue, I’m sorry...You cannot be surprised if someone’s hacked you, especially if you have stuff on your phone.”

On Tuesday, Thorne reacted to the 63-year-old’s response with a series of scathing Instagram Stories.

“Shame on you Whoopi,” Thorne said in one video.

“I just want to say that me watching this video made me feel really bad about myself...You’re so crazy for thinking such terrible things on such an awful situation.”

The actor then announced a boycott of The View, stating that she was going to cancel an upcoming interview on the show because she didn’t “want to be beaten down by a bunch of older women” over her body and sexuality.

Thorne went on to question Goldberg’s views on consent, adding: “Saying if you take a sexy photo then basically it deserves to be leaked like…So if I go out to a party drinking and I want to go dancing on the dance floor…do I deserve to be raped too?”

In an open letter posted to her Instagram Stories, Thorne concluded by saying it was “sick and disgusting” for Goldberg to blame girls for taking nude photographs in the first place and called on her to change her point of view since young girls watch her show.

In August 2018, the man who hacked into hundreds of iCloud accounts of Hollywood stars before leaking their nude photos was sentenced to eight months in prison.

George Garafano became infamous when he stole private photos from people including Jennifer Lawrence and Kirsten Dunst, and made them available across the internet.

Garafano received a prison sentence, three years of supervised release and 60 hours of community service.

I think Whoopi is in the wrong and saying what she did is like blaming someone for their house getting robbed because they own nice things so that obviously invited the robbers to do what they did. No one is to blame for their nudes getting hacked other than the person who hacked them.

God that sounds pretty much identical to my replies on the 'celeb nudes' thread once, a few years back. I am glad to have grown up and discovered feminism since then..however, yeah this could have been me.

Goldbergs opinions are usually trash though. I remember her saying Polanski wasn;t that bad because what he did was 'not rape-rape'...or something along those lines

I agree to an extent. If you're famous you have got to have a bit of common sense when it comes to protecting yourself from this type of stuff, especially after the stuff with Jennifer Lawrence etc. It's the lack of common sense and not learning lessons.

However, I draw the line at her being told she can't do/have something because then she is to blame when it's stolen.

I suppose it's like someone leaving their door unlocked. The blame is still on the burglar, but the home owner had to be bloody idiotic to not lock it in the first place.

Protect yourself, nobody else will.

Why do people take photos? Because they are reminders of how things were at a particular point in time that we will never get back.

Anyone has a right to record how they looked at a point in time, naked or not, celebrity or not. If they are then stolen, the thief has committed a crime, no-one else.

...hmmmm I feel as though I want to defend Whoopie......she’s not saying that anyone deserves to be hacked as such and that being hacked in itself is something that they should take responsibility for....?....just that hacking is a common fact and if you’re a celebrity and you have nude pics on your phone...then they’re on the cloud so never really ‘private’, type thing...?...I mean I can see both sides in the danger of blaming a victim for their own vulnerabilities etc....but I think her thoughts or advice was well meaning...she wasn’t saying that Bella or anyone else deserved to be hacked...just that hacking was a real issue in the current times...and especially for celebrities...

..I think for me personally also..I don’t feel comfortable with the analogy that Bella used and feel that, that may be more damaging to the gravity of these things ...I guess I’m thinking more of what we teach our children and what schools teach our children about online safety and precautions etc...if there had been an incident there as there has been here with Bella...?...then reinforcing online safety wouldn’t be seen as victim blaming, surely...but just an obvious thing to do..?...it used to be thought that personal phones meant personal information and photos etc but what Whoopie is saying is that in 2019 that’s not the case...a nude pic on your phone is a nude pic on the cloud and out there to be hacked..so just realise that..?...but she’s not excusing the hacker’s actions...whereas sometimes sexual abuser’s have been excused with their actions...

Why would you take nude pictures of yourself? Famous or otherwise? I wouldn't

I can see both sides here, but I don't agree with Bellas analogy. If the police tell you don't leave your handbag on the seat of your car, you don't immediately feel shamed, its just a bit of a wake up call, because no matter how careful you are, there are saddos out there, and not just in Hollywood either

mmmm It's certainly good advise around the internet, I'm constantly telling my two (male and female) not to be putting anything online that they would be embarrassed to have shared with everyone because that's the risk you take, even more so for celebs I can imagine. However that lesson is for another day and shouldn't be a reply to someone being hacked and threatened because then it looks a bit like victim blaming (if that makes sense?)

I can see both sides. I'll fully admit I have sent nudes - only to boyfriends, never randoms on tinder or anything but yeah I've sent them in the past. Does that mean people wouldn't feel sympathy for me if I basically got blackmailed after being hacked?

To me that's quite scary and shows a huge lack of empathy.

Exactly yeah, it is important to try and teach people to be safe but it doesn't take away or put blame on any victim of a crime so definitely a time and a place for safety conversations and that time isn't when you are a victim

Only one to blame is the hacker.

Stealing someone’s personal data is a disgrace.
Whoops is entitled to her opinion, Bella is entitled to pose naked, and make them public for whatever reason she likes.

Agree with that Smudgie.

Honestly can't imagine though why anyone, male or female, would have nude pics of themselves anywhere near the Internet.

Don't you ever worry if the relationships go sour that they'll try and blackmail you and leak the photo's to get back at you? .

Revenge porn is now illegal isn't it? , but people still do it . And i can see where Whoopi is coming as we're responsible for our actions. And you have to be so careful now with online and the cloud etc and sending photo's that you think are private, but could easily be viewed by others. Once it's out there it's out there.

But people make mistakes aswell especially when they're young and still learning. But i think it's incredible naive to think every private image/ video you send to just your partner or keep for yourself is automatically safe .

Its like leaving a stranger in your home while you go out for a few hours, who's fault is it if you get burgled ?

Also haven't we got enough to worry about with bank details and identities possibly being hacked if we're not careful , let alone private images/videos getting in the wrong hands. it's not worth the risk .

Online security and privacy protection is not full proof as we all know. Does that mean we are individually at fault for having a bank account or a phone or 100 million other things. No we are not. The same principle applies to photos or anything else.

Yes but what i'm saying is there's already worries with security and personal details online , so throwing leaked photos into the mix is just an even bigger headache that i CAN'T deal with . All we can do is try and protect ourselves and be sensible.

Best to be wary when it comes to personal details & private photos .
But sometimes people are careless with those things .

Her privacy was invaded, that'ts the point. |If she were in Europe, some company would be facing a large gdpr fine.

People should quite rightly expect companies that provide services to maintain their privacy, and it is the fault of the company, not the person.

We all have information that is on line that we expect to be kept private, because we signed up to terms that assured us they would be. If a company breaks those terms, they should be held responsible, not the person whose details were stolen

I think it's virtually impossible for any company to guarantee your privacy and security. I don't do any Internet banking, despite the pressure my bank puts on me to do so, because I've heard so many horror stories. It's unfortunate, but everyone must take responsibility for their own security and not just rely on the fact that we've been told our stuff is secure.

but it doesn't matter if you use internet banking or not. All your details etc are held on line by the bank. If you use a debit or credit card, your details are online ..... your privacy is exposed whether you like it or not

To be fair it is pretty dumb to take and send nudes in this day and age, especially if you're in the public eye.

Doesn't excuse someone else threatening to leak them, of course.
