WARNING - DISTRESSING CONTENT: A puppy has been rescued and rushed to a vet after it was found buried alive, bleeding and badly burned on a beach.

The female pooch was found "incredibly swollen, sunburned and missing 90% of her fur" when she was found on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.

A passerby reportedly spotted a man burying the dog in the sand and alerted authorities, who rushed to the site.

The group PAWS of Hawaii said the dog, who they named Leialoha, was found with lacerations on her front paw, and it appeared a machete was used to slash the animal.

"Poor girl was bleeding from every inch of her body," they wrote on Facebook.

Leialoha is making progress, but she is expected to need a lot of follow up care, PAWS reported.

“Leialoha is doing okay, ate and drank. She is very tired and lethargic, but received lots of SQ fluids,” the animal welfare group said.

The rescue dog had reportedly taken her first bath at her foster home last Thursday.

PAWS thanked those who prayed for, donated and offered to foster Leialoha, who is now being cared for “by a lovely family”.

The post was met with messages of support from animal lovers wishing the pup a speedy recovery.

“She's beautiful! Poor baby, thank you for rescuing her and taking care of her,” one commented.

Another added: “So sad, I hope she recovers okay.”

This is tragic and horrendous. In cases like this the person should have the same done to them as a punishment. Pure evil.

How awful. I also can't bring myself to click the link. A dogs pain is seen in its eyes. If i see the look in this animals eyes it will take me a long time to get over

Disgusting scum should be buried in the sand up to his neck and let the tide come in nice and slowly, so glad she seems to be ok
