Default if you found some cash in something you’d bought from a charity shop...

...so this is inspired by a news story I’ve just read...a lady bought a Carpenters vinyl record at a charity shop in Cheshire...(..it was £3.50 just for the record../..pun...)...anyways, inside the cover was lots of money notes which amounted to £930 in total, a very large sum indeed...which she immediately returned to the charity shop...which is quite an interesting dilemma scenario...

...what would you do if you bought a charity shop item and then found a large sum of money hidden inside ...would you take it and keep it for rainy days and Mondays etc../...return it...?...

I'd keep it. I'd just assume it came with the vinyl record or deny it was there if anybody came asking questions.

I wouldn't hand a penny in if I found one, so why should I hand in £930?

I'd soon get over any guilt in no time.

How does £930 end up there in the first place? And how didn't nobody at no time spot it? That's a fair few notes to be stuck in the sleeve of a vinyl record, it would make a bit of a bulge, wouldn't it?

I would make a donation to the charity involved and keep the rest, if the shop was meant to have it they would have found it

They were probably spread out for that reason, a safe way to store cash at home, a lesson to us all!

I would donate half to the actual charity direct, then keep the other half I think. Those shops pay their managers ridiculous amounts half the time..mind, even donating direct to charities these days lines a few lucky peoples pockets before the actual cause sees anything..hmm

Unless I was having a particularly skint time, when I would have no problem keeping the lot for myself tbh.

Hell, if I had plans that a lot more money would help with I would also keep it all with no guilt. Its them who didn't bother to check the stock properly, 90% of the cash would go to managers and such (meanwhile, the shop workers work for nothing..) and..well..its their issue and noone would know. So yeah. Maybe its more honest to say I would keep the cash, unless I was having a..great day where I would do what I probably should do to be a good person

...what you should do, Vicky..(..if it were to happen..)...is to think of something amazing to do with it for yourself and your family, or whatever you decide ..and that will totally be being a good person...

Now the lady has returned the money, in reality it isn't technically the charities money either, as the person who donated the record did not realise the money was in the sleeve, so the charity should make some effort to try and find who made the donation originally, they keep records of donations now in some shops or by using social media so it might be possible to track the person down, a long shot I know or the person might see the story and come back in and claim their cash if they can prove they donated in the first place

Yeah, the charity shouldn't keep it, that would be as "dishonest" as keeping it yourself. Clearly who ever donated the record did by accident

Thats a great way of putting it ammi..allowing me to both be a selfish git and spend someone elses money on a good time, but allow me to pretend that that makes me good

Nah, thinking more tbh, I would keep it regardless. Chances are handing it in would result in the manager just keeping it, so nah. Or thats how I would convince myself.

I'd probably keep it too unless the person who handed the record in came back looking for it

I’d feel awful unless I gave it all back

I think I’d try to rationalise it at first but doubt I’d go through with keeping any

...thing is though...there really are so many ways that ‘being a good person’ ...as you said..?..can be defined though, it’s not any type of either/or thing...it’s only what we each as individuals lay our own judgements on...I don’t believe for a split second that you would spend any money found, selfishly because that wouldn’t represent anything of who you are...
