Default School bans girls from wearing skirts

Just seen this debated on Sunday Politics

Girls have been banned from wearing skirts at a new high school to 'protect their modesty' - due to glass-sided stairwells in their building.
Eleven-year-old pupils in Year Seven - both boys and girls - at Stowmarket High School, in Suffolk have been told they will have to wear trousers, a blazer and clip-on tie.
This uniform replaces the old uniform of skirts, black pullovers or cardigan previously worn by pupils.
The school initially said the new policy has been partially put in place because of the new building design.

But he said after consultation with builders reassured him there would not be a problem with 'modesty' issues they pressed ahead with the uniform change which has said was 'more practical, especially for lessons like drama where pupils are sitting cross legged on the floor'
.
The new rule - which does not yet apply to students in Year eight, nine, ten and eleven until the 2020 school year - has infuriated some parents.
One parent who wanted to remain anonymous told local press: 'If this really just about glass side stairs then how come female staff are still wearing skirts? No-one believes this nonsense.
'It's obvious that what is really about is cracking down on girls behaving differently than boys by forcing a gender neutral dress code on them.
'They've exempted teachers because they have a union, while the kids are powerless and so their views count for nothing. It's a disgrace.'
Mr Lee-Allan said: 'I was concerned about the new build but have been reassured by the designers that personal privacy has not been an issue in similar buildings.
'The resultant uniform is extremely smart and cheaper than the previous version. It is also designed to be practical - for example we have now have the availability during the summer for students to wear shorts.'

Taking female choice away.... what a surprise!

I understand the reason but it's up to the pupil if they wear a skirt right?

No girls can only wear trousers now, there is no reason, the original reason was modesty due to the glass panels, the builder has assured this will not be an issue but they are enforcing the ban anyway

I get the reasoning tbh, but don't think banning skirts is the answer. The girls will know that the issue is there. And can make a choice? IDK mind, we have an issue with my stepdaughter right now, rolling her skirt up like 6 inches so you can pretty much see her knickers, because apparently all the other girls do that too :S So am a bit torn, but banning girls choices doesn't seem the right way, on gut.

don't go to school anymore then

also this is pure nonsense, because if girls are banned from wearing skirts, so should the female staff at schools be banned from wearing skirts, but that doesn't happen, weird i agree with that one parent

Also, not sure why 'gender neutral' always seems to be taking away from girls. Like, why not just let boys wear skirts too should they chose to? Embrace gender non conformity..if thats the real reason behind thisl

OK just seen cheries reply, if its not the reason of modesty as made out, then its taking away girls choices for no reason. Reminds me of a case a while back where a school (think it was in America) that banned girls wearing skirts as it was 'too distracting for male teachers' Because of course, some teachers being pedos is the fault of the girls for wearing skirts. And the teachers will no longer be pervs if skirts disappear..

no because they won't be pervs anymore at school, they could end up stalking girls after school hours

but yeah as long as the school has no negative publicity

It's ridiculous,if girls want to wear skirts let them ,and if they prefer trousers, also let them, same for the boys.

The proper way to address that would be to paint over the glass or something.

Who even puts glass on a stairway in a place full of hormone-addled teens?

...I’m trying to find an article which is easier to understand with this because the wording../..grammar etc seems a bit weird...I can’t really find a site which I’m familiar with though...I tried to follow a link to the EADT but that led me to some dodgy stuff.....

...anyways I just don’t understand a legitimate article being written in such a way as this seems to be...

‘The pinnacle acknowledged they had been extra handy nevertheless some fogeys and pupils are upset’

‘Eleven-300 and sixty five days-historical pupils in 300 and sixty five days Seven – each ladies and boys’

‘This uniform replaces the regular uniform of skirts, sad pullovers or cardigan previously frail by pupils.’

‘One dad or mum who wished to stay nameless told local press: ‘If this truly ideal about glass facet stairs then how advance feminine workers are soundless carrying skirts? No-one believes this nonsense.’

...it might just be an off day but I think I’ll wait to see what other sites run this story...

The builder has confirmed there will be no issue with the glass panels but they are ploughing on anyway with the ban

..thanks Cherie...not a DM link making sense and being understandable...

...yeah it’s a bit of a strange one because I still don’t understand why the ban only applies to one of the year groups and also doesn’t apply to female staff...it mentions lessons, drama specifically...and skirts not being appropriate to sitting cross legged on the floor for that lesson..?....so addressing that one lesson would seem more the thing and the girls wearing their PE kit or other specified clothing...and then changing back into their skirt inclusive uniform...I’m intrigued to know more...

I think if you're against this you should be against all forms of uniform considering there wasn't much freedom of choice to begin with.

Wonder what the reaction would have been if blind people had been told they couldn't use the stairs without a stick because they were too steep.

It's a similar invasion into personal liberty. Liberty is not dictated by the structural design of things around you. Structural design is dictated by our liberty. Refer to the building regulations now required for disabled people

Tbh I don't really see the point in uniforms at school anyway. Especially not dickhead schools like my stepdaughters where they actually dictate which hairstyles the kids can have, and have put her in detention once for wearing pink socks instead of black..

Then there will be a problem with the trousers, they'll be too tight or the wrong material. :/

...in the same story link..(..but a different school in the area...)....’too tight’ has already been referred to.../...you white witch, you......

Teachers at Dereham Neatherd High School in Shipdham ruled the teen's trousers were too tight and broke the uniform rules at.
