Paper bags have to be manufactured, distributed and they have a very limited use before having to be recycled and replaced.. at 20 each! I don't think that's very efficient :/
Jute bags are much better.

Increasing trade with our closest geographical neighbours and reducing it with countries that need to transport goods over long distances would be a massive positive.

Wups.

no contradictions kizzy, if only you read my posts properly

so the protesters blocked Bank junction today, a section that is mainly used for buses and bikes only, buses were held up for 4 hours … if some of these people had brains they would be very dangerous indeed

why not you? , are you expecting someone else to do it, for someone who managed on public transport into your 40s and someone who professes to be very worried about the planet, that really is a contradiction

So do you support them or not? One minute you do and then you don't, for reasons ranging from diverted police to blocking a cycle lane :/

For kizzy ....this is my take, I support the cause, not the way they are going about it, I couldn’t put it in much simpler terms so let’s see if you get my stance second time round

You appear to be tasking me with some culpability because a bought a small car at 47.. is that right?
I can't be worried about the planet because I own a micra?
If you had any idea how ridiculous you are coming across to me right now

My son and I work at the same place so instead of 3 bus journeys a day each now we go in a car together, does that entitle me to be worried about the planet still, or have I to hold myself to account as as big a polluter as BP? :worried:

Yes kizzy you are as culpable as the next person, the bus will be going on that route whether you and your son are on it or not, unless you are saying you were the only 2 on the bus...and now in addition you are puffing along the route adding to the pollution....and you are increasing BP profits ....

Who are funding these advertisements? ... There have been countless campaigns and public information and awareness raising over the years, you would have to have been living under a rock not to have seen any.

Again you are inferring that because Greta Tunberg flew back from America it negated her argument for governments to take climate change more seriously. ..it doesn't cherie.

Peaceful protest is nothing more than a nuisance? Well I guess that's your perspective and you're welcome to it. I see it as a necessary distraction.

We could/should but it's fairly well understood that post-Brexit, trade with the US will increase (to be fair, it's been increasing year-on-year for decades anyway) and trade with closer countries will decrease... and all of that transatlantic trade is far from environmentally friendly. This isn't just a Brexit poke - it really is quite relevant. Increased trade with Commonwealth nations has also been suggested as a positive for the UK after Brexit... but again, environmentally not great at all, given the distances to many of the commonwealth nations.

Don’t they have many celeb backers, maybe Emma Thompson could fund an advert campaign rather than flying first class to support them...1400 arrests ..how is that peaceful! Okay no one is hurling bottles but you can’t call it peaceful by any stretch of the imagination, I’ve already said I support peaceful protest do I need to trawl back though the thread again to find it for you kizzy

Then I will have to accept that and offset it with the years I spent without a car to justify any increase in our carbon footprints.
Does that now entitle me to question why there was no mention of the climate or any government pledges in relation to climate change in the Queens Speech today?

It’s all Diane Abbott’s fault

So now it's Emma Thompson that's the target of your ire? Oof cherie you're really cross with lots of people today.
Could you explain how funding an advert would make the government take more notice of climate change.. after all that is the aim of the rebellion protests isn't it?

In the main it's a sit down protest, so people are being arrested for obstruction. If you support peaceful protest can you explain how it can be done in large numbers in the cspital without causing an obstruction?

Yes, I do understand that. My point is that people can buy all kinds of fruit and veg which is seasonal in this country, at any time of the year, by flying or shipping it in from other countries. Why? Who wants sour strawberries in November? Someone does... or there'd be no supply. It seems greedy and stupid.

Watch me throw a big spanner in here... what about the things we can't grow here? Bananas, oranges, pineapple, and other produce.
It's going to get a bit boring if all we have is a few cox's pippin and conference pears.

Oranges aren't as big an issue as they can be grown relatively close to the UK but tbh things like bananas and pineapples would (environmentally speaking) be better to be a bit "rarer".

Although the meat industry does more damage than any amount of fruit/veg/grain importing...
