I'm trying to say... yes, the video shows what happened after the cop detailed him. What I saw was someone being quite belligerent and a police officer being quite calm. I've read about the incident. You can't eat or drink on the platforms nor in the trains and according to the NY Times, there are clear signs up. A mountain was made out of a mole hill, and personally, I'd give the cop and the sandwich man 50% of the blame each.

He was being physically held only indirectly because he was eating a sandwich. The real reason he was being physically held is that when he was approached, he was told he wasn't allowed to eat or drink on the platform. But he continued, and the officer issued a citation. When this happened he cursed, refused to show ID and made a homophobic comment to the officer. According to the article I've read. Only then does the video start. I didn't hear anyone mention his race on the video except he himself. I just think the whole thing was handled badly by both parties and a huge fuss ensued. That is what I am saying.

If you're reading the same article as me then it also goes on to say the officer might have gone too far. Which is surely the point, why are we physically holding anyone for eating a sandwich? He gave him a citation for eating. Laughable but true.

Yeah, the officer went too far, of course he did. But what about the homophonic comment? They both went too far. It is just my interpretation of course, but I think this had more to do with two men having a pissing contest, but one had a badge and that trumps sandwich.

I dont agree the guy went to far. He was angry at being physically held for eating a sandwich, and he's allowed to show such emotion IMO. Why hold him? Whats he gonna do, run away and eat the sandwich down the road? The holding was not reasonable and I can absolutely understand why he was pissed off..

Like I said, he wasn't being held for eating a sandwich. He was issued a citation for eating a sandwich contrary to Public Health rules clearly signed, and after already having been informed of that by the officer.

He was being held because when the officer issued the citation the bloke kicked off.

In my book he's allowed to kick off for such a stupid charge. I'm quite surprised that as an officer of the courts you've made no comment on how frivolous cases like this take man hours and waste the courts time.

To me, that is the point - As I hinted to above - The incident is now famous, the guy is likely to sue and might win and the police department chiefs have to apologize. All in all, this action simply wasn't worth it.

Absolutely, I've been to San Francisco, nice place but alot of crime, I would have thought 4 police officers arresting a guy for eating a sandwich was a massive waste of their precious time, that could most certainly have been spent looking for actual crime and criminals

...I think the important context to this though, is why Mr Foster was approached in the first place for eating his breakfast sandwich...?....because everything else came after that ...he stated clearly that he didn’t feel detained, he felt harassed because the video is claiming that eating a breakfast sandwich is not an uncommon occurrence and that the police officer had passed many people also eating, to approach Mr Foster...surely for anyone, that would definitely feel like harassment...the officer didn’t explain why he had been singled out and but because he was being questioned...because he had caused and escalated a situation of a guy eating a breakfast sandwich...something that’s apparently commonplace...?...he called for backup ...I can understand why the apologies, this is policing at its worst, surely...and because of police racial stereotyping ...it’s understandable that it’s being questioned in that way as well...

...I would hope that the law would be equal and not be walking passed other sandwiches, to get to a specific one it’s focused on...as claimed in the video...and the eat-in being staged in protest because breakfast sandwich eaters on the platform appear to be a common and regular sight, which is baffling to many...why that particular sandwich offended that particular officer...

the video could be doctored, who made the video, what was their motivation to make one and post it when a man clearly broke the law?


this whole incident tells one more about the maker than the perp
