Mother, 47, who was forced to wait nearly SIX hours on freezing
pavement for an ambulance after slipping and breaking her foot dies of heart
attack in hospital just hours later

Donna Gilby, 47, left her flat in Cwmaman, Wales, just after 8am on Tuesday morning and slipped over
Friends and family called an ambulance and huddled around her with blankets and tried to keep her warm
Ambulance turned up six hours later and took the mother-of-one to hospital, she suffered a cardiac arrest
Family have now said she was the sort of woman who 'always put others before herself' and was 'good as gold

A mother who was forced to wait nearly six hours on a freezing pavement for
an ambulance later died in hospital of a heart attack.

Donna Gilby left her flat just after 8am on Tuesday morning for a doctor's
appointment when she slipped and fractured her foot.

Now the 47-year-old's family wants the world to see the photograph of her on
the freezing pavement - face-down and unable to move - as her friends and
neighbours rallied round, covering her with blankets and duvets to keep her
warm.

They also called 999 for the mother-of-one, from Cwmaman, who suffered
from an irregular heart beat and had two mini-strokes, and alerted her family
who live nearby.

That's true, it was only her foot that was fractured, after about an hour surely someone would have thought "That's it, we're taking you to A&E ourselves"

There has to be more detail. That's appalling.

No way would you leave her there on the pavement for six hours.

The deliberate under-funding and covert privatisation of the NHS with Tory austerity cuts. I'm not using this tragic incident to make a political point; that is the answer. That is the reason. There aren't enough ambulances because the government is not funding enough ambulances, and ambulance controllers have to prioritise based on what's being reported. If the person is awake and responsive, the ambulance may take hours. If you need an ambulance quickly, emphasise the reason: the person is unconscious, unresponsive, or bleeding heavily. Otherwise you'll wait. Sad, sad situation.

Yeah seems odd that they would leave her there for 6 hours, why not get her in a taxi or get a lift? weird

If I had to guess, when they called an ambulance they'll have been casually advised not to move her... and (frankly) most people are afraid to go against what's perceived as "the voice of authority" even if common sense dictates it's time to do that.

Waiting tones can be horrific here at times, my mum has an accident earlier in the year, cut an artery in the process , was bleeding profusely and was told she’d have to wait 2 hours for an ambulance, the service you get in the hospitals is great, but waiting times and availability of equipment is very hit and miss

Statement in response to November 2019’s performance figures
19th December 2019

Jason Killens, the Welsh Ambulance Service’s Chief Executive, said: “We had more than 40,300 calls via 999 in November, which is 2,000 more than last November.

“While we are disappointed not to have achieved our target in November, the average response to a Red call was six minutes and 39 seconds, and we reached 73 per cent of these calls in ten minutes.

“That said, we accept that a wait for help can feel much longer to someone in distress and we apologise to anyone who waited longer than they should have.

“An increase in high-priority calls, coupled with significant hospital handover delays, were the main reasons we missed our target for the first time since October 2015.

“This inevitably has a knock-on effect to the length of time people have to wait for our care.

“Pressures are being felt across the whole system, not just in Wales but nationally, and we continue to work with health boards to find ways to release our ambulances quickly and support the discharge of patients, freeing up more beds.

“We’re also doing lots of work to provide care closer to patients’ homes and prevent hospital admissions in the first place, by upskilling our staff and working with partners to ensure we can point patients to alternative services if they don’t require a trip to hospital.

“We will always aim to get to those patients whose condition is life-threatening or very urgent first and as soon as we can.

“It’s important that people use the right service for them and don’t immediately turn to 999 or the Emergency Department.

“NHS Direct Wales, 111, or your local pharmacy is always a good place to start.

They will have been told not to move her, my aunt fell last week and some people called an ambulance and the ambulance operator said they shouldn't move her, that said the ambulance turned up after 20 minutes and that was on a Saturday evening in London, I would have thought people would have used their common sense after a hour? or the ambulance service would have sent a rapid response person to assess ?

Such sad news especially at this time of the year.

I really don't get why they just left her lying down on the pavement for SIX hours. Something really doesn't add up here. They could have brought her to the hospital themselves, or if they really wanted to wait for the ambulance and if common sense kicked in, then they could have lifted her in to the house to be warm, and maybe try and do something to reduce the pain from the fracture.

Hmmm,Im a bit sceptical about this one from The Sun,surely someone could have put her in the house or their car or even a chair .

She’s currently in hospital for something unrelated to that accident, but she’s fine in respect to her injury yeah, thought she was going to lose her leg from it at one point but she’s healed well
