Default Malaysia returns 42 containers of 'illegal' plastic waste to UK

Of course they should send it back.

They need to sort out
their Illegal Waste firms.

[Malaysia is returning 42 shipping
containers of illegally imported
plastic waste to the UK,
its environment minister has announced.
Yeo Bee Yin said Malaysia would take
"steps to ensure" the country
"does not become the garbage
dump of the world".
She added Malaysia had sent
back 150 containers to their country of origin.
The UK government said it received
a request from Malaysian authorities
last year to repatriate the waste
and some containers had already arrived back.
An Environment Agency spokesman
said: "We continue to work with
the shipping lines and Malaysian
authorities to ensure all waste
is brought back as soon as possible."]

While no country should be forced to take another country's waste, presumably a deal was done and someone in Malaysia accepted the cash. Still, it's nice to see Malaysia taking a stand on something environmental, even if it's not its burgeoning carbon dioxide emissions, deforestation, land burning etc..

Is the rubbish in those containers dating to the browns government?

If not, stop blaming labour.

Obviously, boris is going to be driving your local recycling lorry.

As arista rightly said this has been going on for years and it not only takes someone in this country to set up the deal but also people in the country it’s being exported to set up the deal.

Proof of that claim?... that wasn't the point of my post, the point was to highlight the use of other countries to mske us look like we are functioning effectively. We don't.

If we had the facilities here to process the waste, an industry that would create jobs then that would show we are a truly independent nation, capable of handling our own waste effectively.

Your opinion means as much to me as the next persons which is very little without something to back up your claims.
Again my point was in relation to the 'spirit of brexit' and the supposed self sufficiency it rings in. This is a perfect jumping off point for a discussion on whether we really are ready to be truly independent.

We import and export all around the world, that’s not going to stop because we are leaving Europe.

Nothing to discuss, we are leaving and labour was well and truly beaten.

Kid falls of his bike, then you get, knew that would happen it’s because of brexit.

The Importing and exporting of goods and services has little to do with the offloading of potentially hazardous waste to other countries. For arguments sake though let's say that it is part of a deal, that deal may have been EU specific and In order for Malaysia to trade to the 27 waste services could have been a factor, It's not that much of a stretch of the imagination is it?

It will stop if that country no longer accepts the terms in which this is allowed to continue if we are out of the EU then this could well be the reason.

It may also be a climate change issue, that may be the goal of Malaysia to reduce their footprint, to reduce waste...including ours?

If we don't want to be reliant on other countries in the EU and to govern and fund ourselves, is it not hypocritical to be using other countries land to make it appear we don't have problems that need addressing? We need infrastructure to deal with this issue, industry and jobs will be created.
I thought that was the goal of brexit?

Malaysia has returned containers to "over a dozen countries".

Only the Brits are to blame though, because... BREXIT!

Sigh.. it was a thought.

Turns out we were only illegally dumping our waste, so that's ok :/

Or maybe we're only discussing the Brits because this is Britain and we are discussing our own country.

I'd accept that Marsh, but they lost me at "brexit".
