Yes, I hope it does go to subscription tbh to stop people moaning about paying 4.00 a week

As someone on the radio pointed out taxes go towards all sorts of things people don’t use

How about we let childless people or people whose kids have left education pay less tax as they don’t use schools or receive child benefit!

I hope the Beeb does go to subscription service, it will stop the moaners

Education, health etc. are for the overall benefit of society as a whole, not just the individual. There's no valid comparison.

In fact, you know, I wouldn't even be that bothered if the government DID pay for the BBC through tax. It's the threats, fines, made up stories about magic vans, and general loanshark behaviour that's the main issue.

True but like I said generally for collective knock-on benefit, not individual whims. e.g. like I said, paying for education obviously doesn't just benefit people who have children... it wouldn't be much good for anyone if in 20 years we had a country full of illiterate adults. A person who never needs a doctor paying for healthcare still benefits them because a country needs to be overall healthy to function. Someone who has never experienced a housefire paying for the fire brigade, etc etc.

And I even agree that a tax budget for arts & entertainment is important... I strongly believe in the benefits and potential of the entertainment industry.

But the BBC is in dire need of modernising and overhaul, and £13.50 a month for every household in the country is WILDLY disproportionate for what's on offer.

Obscene is the word for how the BBC through TV Licensing hound people.
Even worse now they will be tearing into over 75 year olds.

The BBC is awful at present.
All through this pandemic it has for three quarters of the time put tripe on and endless repeats.

The major shows and events it has would easily be snapped up by other channels.
I wouldn't miss the BBC now myself.

For its recent decisions and it's attitude,it's not a pillar of anything that much worthwhile anymore.

The licence should be scrapped full stop,in my view.
Make the BBC compete like all other channels.

I think over 75s regardless of wealth, have earned a little something.
A free licence to watch TV should be no hardship to the said BBC.

Not when it can pay a presenter and 2 to even 3 other guests on a football highlights programme.
Neither does it need 2 presenters in a morning either.
Nor the never ending number it seems of weather presenters.

Me, I'd scrap the licence.
I'd close TV Licensing down tomorrow and not lose a seconds sleep at those losses of jobs.
Then leave the BBC to actually come into the 21st century and not be stuck in the mid 20th century.

the bbc doesn't need to compete for viewer figures so there is absolutely no reason for them to have high profile/ highly paid presenters. There is also zero reason for them to be running soaps or shows like strictly. If they are a public broadcaster that we are subsidising then they should stick to public broadcasting, it is their determination to be all things to all people and to compete with other channels that drives the costs up.

This is not difficult stuff. The BBC have over reached

They sent my mum a letter last week saying she owed £8 and to 'PAY NOW'. I begged her to refuse to pay, but she paid there and then.

BBC wont be getting a penny from me.
