Thumbs up

"This time Marine is in charge and her true colours have emerged, at least economically.
Statistical analysis has revealed that 66 per cent of Le Pen’s manifesto is left-leaning,
focusing on healthcare, public services and redistribution. Conservative economics such as
free market reforms and small government comprise only 21 per cent; in 2017 it was 35
per cent and under her father in the 1980s it was 80."

Despite this Le Pen is still depicted, in the words of this week’s New York Times, as
‘hard-right’ and ‘anti-immigrant’. She is neither. She has made a clear distinction
between Islam and Islamists, stressing she has no enmity against the religion, which
earned her the ridicule of Macron’s interior minister, who accused her of being ‘soft’ on
Islam. As for immigrants, as Le Pen stressed in a recent TV debate, she welcomes
genuine refugees, such as Ukrainians, but not young men from Africa in search of better
economic opportunities."

Yes LT
a better link than Slim

In Today's FT
Le Pen is willing to appoint Leftwingers
if she wins part 1.

In the Spirit of National Unity.

Yeah, even most of our prominent right wing figures would find that too far. Banning face coverings is completely understandable, but a bloody head scarf?! Mental.

That said, am I remembering right that France is ardently and proudly secular? I'd imagine it comes from a place of anti overt visible religion, rather than specifically anti islam.

3 points is a lot though. Every time the election comes round they say the same stuff and then she never comes close. She is not electable, no matter how hard people try

The burqa but not the headscarf I believe, the ban on that predates Macron as well

Edit - only thing I can find about the headscarf is that it was banned recently in sports competitions

What's the point? Unless the headscarves add some aerodynamic advantage or something who cares what they wear?

let's not forget that france suffered more than most from isis attacks. The banning of the burqa was a security measure

I'd say Macron will be quite happy with that? Seemed most of the recent polls were giving him a narrower lead

Weird how the two traditional parties are so marginalised now. Two right wing nationalists, a Marxist, and Macron, who never had a party pre-2017, make up the top four
