Bus journeys in England will be capped at £2 from January to March next year in a bid to ease the rising cost of living, the government has said.
The £60m plan could see some passengers save more than £3 per single bus ticket, according to the Department for Transport (DfT). Transport secretary Grant Shapps said the move will provide "direct help" to thousands of households. But Labour said the plan "fails to match the scale of the crisis". Meanwhile, from Sunday, single bus fares will be capped at £2 in the Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire regions as part of longer-term schemes. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-62775639 |

Travelling anywhere in this country on public transport already costs way more than in Europe, so this is absolutely nothing. The issue was the cost before they did this, not that they've made a useless gesture when it's already too late.

If you steal thousands from people, then offer them a few quid, it might seem like great news, but it's a meaningless gesture. There's no way you can look at the facts and say otherwise.

were the bus companies planning a price hike before march? Thats the crucial question really i would have thought. The other question is how many fares would normally be at the £2 level. If the standard journey is 3 stops and it currently costs £1 then it frees them to double the price

Stop making excuses.
It's spare change, not even the cost of the cheapest government covid contract given to a donor.

Bus £2 fare cap extended to end of October
[The £2 cap on bus fares in England has been extended again until the end of October, the government has announced. The cap, which applies to more than 130 bus operators outside of London, will then rise in November to £2.50 for 12 months, before prices are reviewed.] [The current limit on fares has now been extended twice after warnings hundreds of services could be cut without it. Its aim is to ease the cost of living pressures on passengers but also to encourage people to use buses. Bus operators have still not seen the same number of passengers return to using services as before the Covid pandemic, with levels recovering to around 85 to 90%, according to the Department for Transport.] https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-65616182 |

I believe the £2 cap ends at the end of this month.
I've been talking advantage of this lately. Do you know what prices the fares are rising to, Arista? Last edited by Alf; 26-10-2023 at 03:40 PM. |

I've been on five buses and two trains today and spent £15.90 on fares. Absolute bargain.

Just a few little towns on the outskirts of Hull.
This morning I was in Hessle and then Cottingham. This afternoon I was in Withernsea and then Hedon. I love to spend my days off doing a pub crawl in little towns and villages whilst public transport is so cheap |
