Cool My local Aldi has locked away all spirits!

If you want a bottle, at the checkout ask the lady and she goes into the storeroom and gets one

mess

serves you right for nicking booze

in some areas in London I think I read they had locked away the steak so you had to ask someone to get you one which is even more of a mess

If the solitary gap-year student staff member on duty at Aldi tried to stop a shoplifter there'd be no one left to run frantically between manning the till and stacking the shevles.

"Not permitted to stop them"

Also possibly cottoning onto the fact that it's not worth getting AIDS from a needle-stick stabbing from a junkie to save a faceless company a few £, whilst being paid minimum wage.

Why would anyone who isn't employed specifically as security staff ever tackle a thief? It's not your money! Putting yourself in harm's way is ridiculous.

The above actually happened to a mate of mine btw not just hypothetical - he worked for TK Maxx, chased down and fought with a junkie stealing sunglasses, got pricked with a needle.

He didn't actually catch anything but he sure did have a fun time getting pumped full of precautionary drugs/waiting/testing to make sure.

Simply not worth it. If these companies want security guards, they need to pay for security guards, not expect their front line staff to do that as well.

That said - Tesco DOES have paid security guards and I swear I've never seen one of them get off their arse or even so much as look up from their wee desk when the alarm at the door beeps . I've set it off before with unnoticed tags going through sef checkout... door beeps, I stand around waiting with my wee receipt dutifully in hand... no one ever actually turns up to check.

The problem is if a large number of people go in (say 5+) with hoods up/hats on etc. then realistically even if there is security, they can't tackle them... and if they're only doing petty theft (small items off the shelves) it's going to be a low priority for police. Unless there are police already nearby, theyre not coming with lights & sirens for that sort of low-level crime.

Only two scenarios after that. In small towns, they usually take one look at CCTV and know exactly who it was . In bigger cities frankly the chances of even figuring out who it was let alone catching them with stolen goods in hand is pretty much zero. If you don't catch a shoplifter red handed WITH the stolen goods on them, the ability to charge them with anything is basically zero.
