Obvs the launch did fantastic at 2.5/3.6M
But then overnights started dropping to 1.5M which is still very good, then to 1.2M and 1M. And now it’s getting overnight 800K which is a big drop and shows people have tuned out. Obviously people don’t watch LIVE TV much anymore but it was getting a lot higher overnight until last Friday. Any ideas why people would have stopped watching? I’m really enjoying it.
The only thing I think could be improved is the tasks, there not the best so far. |

I think it's a pretty standard drop off, people will have watched the early shows out of curiosity but it never retains the audience of the first few days
I just hope it doesn't go much below 800k. It's enjoyable but it is missing a bit of a spark atm I think, we're yet to have many dramas or big talking points |

It needs are race row or transphobia row, a proper one, not one manufactured by the tabloids.

Is that accounting for catchup? I’m trying to play my part by keeping the two shows and live stream on when I can. Unfortunately Northern Monkey is right - we need some scandal to keep the viewers engaged. The fact we’ve only had one rule break so far is making this season “too clean” and that’s reality show cancer.

It aint my big bruvva.
Sorry guys I'm still deep into the negative camp about it. I'm convinced oldschool fans who think this is good are just determined to make it work... it's not even vaguely on course. It feels like a cheap knock-off ... and not in the "colourful camp chaos" way that Channel 5 did in the first few Ch5 series. Realistically it doesn't even compare to more than half of the Channel 5 civilian series (Yes there were some duds, but in hindsight there were also plenty of classic characters). Let alone any of the Ch4 series. And a million miles from the peak era. I was hopeful but for me it's missed the mark entirely. Viewership suggests people are simply bored. Even "Love Island" is clearly past its best days. This sort of reality format is simply dying. |

I don't know about the live stream if it's online - but in terms of TV... this is not how TV ratings work. No one knows that you have it on .

The network cares, they can easily drop the show if it’s not making a return for them.

BB needs to do two things to have any chance of being successful again in this country.
1. Live Feed - Even if it's put up on some subscription based platform, it's more authentic to the brand, produces better quality programming for BB, and conceptually is what sets BB apart from other personality based competitions. 2. Unfiltered contestants - Obviously due to the times we live in where some people are afraid of their own shadow, a lot of TV in general (especially Reality TV) is having to censor themselves just so that they don't get flung off the air due to receiving loads of complaints for "controversial content" and therefore enforcing a forced positivity narrative instead. And unfortunately I'm going to guess that BB is largely trying to follow Strictly and MasterChef UK into the forced positivity camp, and when we look at the most popular Big Brother years, they had a mix of drama, humour, and cool down/chill out moments in them, being forced to be positive is boring TV and unnatural (and you as a viewer can tell it's unnatural) and Channel 5's vulgar era was too unpleasant for most people to want to watch. Basically BBUK needed to return in an era that was less overly sensitive about everything, because BBUK in the 00's was to Reality TV what Rockstar was to Video Games. Crude, vulgar, disgusting at times, but also funny, interesting and iconic all at the same time.

I think the lack of drama and tension in the first couple of weeks has probably caused it, as opposed to something like The Traitors that really captured peoples attention and felt like compulsive must-see viewing because it was both highly dramatic and strong on the tactical gameplay. As unlikeable as a couple of the housemates are, there is no real antagonist in this series so far.

Is it because they cast people to play specific characters in reality TV now? So everyone seems to be a version of a character we have already seen?

That’s just how people watch (or don’t watch) terrestrial TV now. There’s little point keeping up with them now at this point.

It’s natural for viewers to drop off from the launch. Plus nowadays so many people don’t watch at the time, they catch up.
If you look at at recent game shows then The Traitors was a slow burner at the start and then it massively spread and got an audience (bear in mind this was a whole new show not dine before so the curiosity element was still there). If you look at something like race across the world the first season on BBC2 has the lowest viewing figures, the second increased and when they moved season 3 to BBC1 it shot up. Again this is a relatively ‘new’ show. Big brother is unlikely to pull in the figures of C4 days as so many people have their thoughts on BB already due to how long it’s been going but having it on ITV2 is likely to also impact the viewing numbers.

Another factor could be when autumn strikes all the reality shows seem to come out, you've got so many on at the moment maybe more newer viewers to big brother would prefer to watch the other shows. I'd say it should have aired late August instead. There seems a lack of good telly then

Plus I don't even get how ratings even work these days. Everyone watches streaming and catch up so I don't know how they can work out properly how many people are watching

…there’s many factors, I think…BB is yet to gain the newer audience who haven’t known it before…that’s not an instant thing and Traitors for instance is particularly fast paced in format because every day someone leaves and there are two sources of leaving…maybe this series as well has focused on what made the show popular back in the day and what the original fans would want…but also needs to focus on the things that new fans would wan and hope for…that’s all a pretty big ask so I think they’re doing ok …maybe not the ratings they hoped for but TV shows aren’t watched in the same way as back in the day either… |

…and also…some viewers might prefer to binge watch shows toward the end than commit their time each evening…binge watching is such a thing now and a preference for some…

It’s doing really well for the channel it’s on and it’s holding its own against massive competition in MAFS, GBBO AND CELEB RACE ACROSS THE WORLD. There is so much reality tv on at the moment. Mafs is seen as a huge success but BB has matched its numbers and outdone its numbers on occasion. Last night 950k watched BB live so it does seem it’s retained a core live audience and with itvx I’m sure these episodes will get around 1.5 million.

…^^^…great points, Daniel…and of all the reality shows, it seems to still be sparking big discussion sections …so that’s all going to elevate its popularity…(…hopefully)…so long as they build on this one and keep choosing diverse housemates to appeal to many demographics…
