[ITV bosses mulling plans to screen popular soaps
online in bid to attract new audiences amid declining viewing figures] [ITV chiefs are discussing a major shake-up of its soaps which could see them screened first, or exclusively, through online streaming. The move has been prompted by declining viewing figures, forcing budget cuts to Coronation Street and Emmerdale, say ITV sources. Anxious bosses are desperately looking at how they can attract a new audience, as even their older viewers are watching less terrestrial TV in favour of streaming giants such as Netflix.] https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbi...g-figures.html |

They want to get better scriptwriters and producers for the soaps.
The sick doom and gloom all the time from writers are almost killing off the soaps with long, way too long, drawn out getting more ridiculous by the second rubbish storylines. |

Most people who watch soaps are elderly tbh.
I know the article says even the olds watch less terrestrial tv, but putting things online only still will be a barrier to the core audience. |

However the sick, violent and really disturbing long drawn out storylines now even on Corrie. Has had me thinking they've possibly set out to drive away their OLDER long standing audiences particularly as to Corrie. ITV nor BBC really give a damn about their viewers or what they want and think. |

what they are actually saying is that the soaps are so crap, no-one watches them anymore.
People in the past were forced to watch soaps because there wasn't anything else on TV. Now, they can watch anything |

Yes Soaps are crap .. We stopped watching Coronation Street the moment they started telling us what was going to happen in the next episode !! For 20 years we watched avidly as the Wednesday night episode finished on a dramatic moment then we had to wait until the following Monday night episode to find out the ending of the scene Proper engrossing drama !! Personally I think phasing the Soaps out is a bad idea.
While they're certainly not my thing, they do have a lot of fans when actually made well, plus there have been quite a few Actors over the years that have had their breakout on a Soap Opera and then gained superstar status later on in their career. To use a foreign example, Chris Hemsworth started off on Home & Away, without that Show he never would've got the Thor role, which in turn has given him other Movie offers in Hollywood, and he is now one of the biggest names in Hollywood, that was all thanks to Home & Away.

If soaps went back to that schedule, then it might take off again. Eastenders ruined it all with their two and three episode a week and an omnibus edition on Sundays. Why Coronation Street followed their schedule, I'll never know |

I remember it just on a Monday in the early 80s. Probably followed by "Name that tune?" And preceeded by "It's a vets life"

Maybe you’ve got a bit of false memory syndrome Pretty sure it was on twice weekly in the 60’s /70’s anyways Elsie Tanner lived a few miles away from us and Len Fairclough lived about a 100 yards away .. I used to walk past his house every day going to primary school .. ( gulp) Off the t’internet .. The programme centres on a cobbled, terraced street in the fictional Weatherfield, a town based on inner-city Salford, England. Originally broadcast twice weekly, the series began airing six times a week in 2017. The programme was conceived by scriptwriter Tony Warren. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
