You should leave your heating on a few hours a day while away in Winter dontchaknow Cherie! My mum learned this the hard way (in a rented house too, lolz) - went away for a week over winter, came back to burst pipes and the whole ceiling caved in. Two ceilings actually - pipes burst in the loft, ceiling caved into the upstairs bedroom, then through again to the living room. Tens of thousands of pounds of damage .

I'm sure your house is fine though .

And it's freezing today too. I couldn't feel my hands when I went out and I was wearing three coats!

I was still cold.

Always wondered if it’s cheaper to leave it on all the time or just keep firing the heating up as and when required ..

it is not on all the time as mostly indoors the temp will be 16 or thereabouts without the heating on, and when we are at home we put the thermo down to 10 at night as we dont want it coming on at night unless it is baltic

Ah ..

I do know that some have their heating on low 24/7 in cold weather and thought it maybe better than our method of banging it on full when it gets too cold

There never seems to be a definitive answer to this, that said if it is not on, it is not costing (apart from the standing charge) is my motto

This is where smart meters are very useful. It's different for everyone, because everyone's house and heating needs are different, but my smart meter showed that it was more cost effective for me to keep my heating on 24/7 than switching it off at night and having the place warm up from cold every morning

The good news is, and I know SB will be worried, the house was fine, it was a balmy 15 degrees while we were away, bumped it up on the way home to 21 and it was toasty on arrival.....

Adorable, though (the gloves)

Snow is a once a decade thing here and usually flurries, though that varies. On average, we have less than 24 hrs of freezing temps each year. So maybe a couple of hours per night during "cold spells".

Anyway, we're supposed to get an arctic hype thing beginning Monday I think. Temperatures are supposed to be down to 18F ~ 22F (-7C ~-5C) for a couple of nights for a few hours... mid 30s/above freezing during the day... that's pretty cold here and we don't really winterize in this part of TX. We don't even salt. We just wait for temps to come back up. So we're going to drain the pipes for a couple of days and just move to bottled water. Not really drama for us, we're accustomed to this... drama would be leaving the water in the pipes.

It's only because we have one brick wall that stays in the shade nearly 100% of the day and it has a lot of pipework that loves to freeze even if we drip the faucets. Most people keep their pipes in the attic where it is fully uninsulated.

Anyway, when we lived in the Northeast US, we had two blizzards in a week and had to Minecraft out of our homes and shovel snow off our garage port cover (very flat), so this is a non-event for us. /weather chat

Edit: I do miss winter fashion, though. It doesn't really go with the humidity.
