The Spice Girls' big comeback single is already making Headlines - for all the wrong reasons...

Meant to whip up frenzy ahead of their world tour, download sales of Headlines (Friendship Never Ends), have been hugely disappointing.

To make thing worse, the track - which is in the shops on Monday - is hardly getting ANY airplay.

Humiliatingly, it has been relegated to the C-list on Radio 1, which means it gets barely one play a day.

George Ergatoudis, the station's Head Of Music, explains: "The opinion of the Radio 1 playlist team is that the song isn't strong enough.

"Clearly there's a huge number of Spice Girls fans out there - look at the tickets they have sold. But Headlines is very disappointing. "The song simply isn't strong enough.. it would have been a B-side in their heyday."

Figures released at the beginning of the week showed that Headlines barely shifted 300 copies when it was first available last weekend. It limped into the charts at No.124.

Since then it has struggled to a lowly 20 after selling 4,907 copies, and sources in the Spice Girls camp are privately fuming at how badly it's doing. One tells us: "They wanted it to be a surefire No.1 on downloads alone but it has failed to connect with the public." We're not surprised. The Spice Girls made their name with catchy pop and dreamy ballads - but Headlines is one of the weakest things they've ever done.

And we're not alone in thinking it. DJ Chris Moyles slagged it off on his Radio 1 Breakfast Show yesterday, while a spokeswoman for London's Capital Radio told us: "The Spice Girls aren't playlisted here." Ouch!

The Girls' 19 Management are also dismayed with Headlines' poor impact on the download market. One source admits: "Everyone's putting on a brave face. But the focus is very much on the tour - they can always fall back on the success of that instead."

Let's hope so...

This is ridiculous. It hasn't even been released yet and already it's a flop?
Most people buy the 'Children In Need' single as opposed to downloading it as it goes to charity.

Exactly, i agree, the article says the single is released next week which is wrong. Its the week after next.

They don't mention that Spice Girls are on A List on Radio 2 playlist either do they.

It's a very weak song.

It's a slow ballad which may seem boring to some poeple but IMO it had to be as it's for charity.
I would have preffered a fast pop song though but it wouldn't have suited 'Children In Need.'

If you listen to it a few times it kinda is a grower im likieng IT BUT they should OF RELEASED 'Voodoo' and headlines as a B side imo.... And i thought that to about people buying the single for children in need it is a disapointing Comeback single imo i dont think the Spice girls care about if it gets to NO.1 as there not back PERMENTLY 'which i would of liked...... i think they ALL didnt want to do this comeback esepicially Mel C they only did imo for the money and to boost there carrers BUT I LOVE them they were Fantatic but i just think they are init for the money.

I would say though it could get to TOP 10 at very least BUT i hope NO.1

To be honest it sounds like Radio 2 dross on the clip on iTunes. But then again Radio 2 type music seems popular with the young people these days.

Their comeback wasn't centred around the single and I think it was released in order to promote the tour.
The Spice Girls and the people behind their comeback wouldn't care if Headlines went to No. 110 as long as the tour was sold out (which it was.)
