Not the fat cats "sponsoring" the Games but the taxpayers so-called representatives, the Tory Government, who can't afford an army to protect the country (apparently) but who are prepared to use what little we've got to "pat down" Olympic ticket holders and tell them where the nearest toilets are .....

I think because of the '72 munich games incident and also the '96 bombing it's right that the Olympics should have super tight security. It's obviously a major target. Even if they are doing menial tasks at least they'll be there.

Retired Colonel Richard Kemp, a former infantry commander in the British Army, said the timing of the announcement was "bizarre".

"We've known about the Olympic Games for seven years, if we couldn't have planned better than this then there's something wrong," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

Colonel Kemp said he understood many of the extra troops being drafted in had just returned from Afghanistan - or were about to be deployed there - and would have been due to go on leave.

Sources at the Ministry of Defence said the extra military personnel would be compensated if they had their leave cancelled.

The BBC understands the extra troops were put on a "one day" notice to move recently, in anticipation of the problems at G4S.

The government has previously said a total security force of 23,700 will take care of venue security, including 13,500 troops and the G4S contingent.

So more than 10% of the Biritish Army will be "guarding" the OG - presumably paid for by the taxpayer - meanwhile the "sponsors" have a monoploy on sales withing the Olympic venues and will be raking in the profits .....

Many of those troops will, of course, be facing redundancy due to Tory Government cuts .....

G4S will have overall control of security at more than 30 Olympics sporting venues and 70 "non-competition" venues such as car parks and hotels.

Some of the people contracted to work for G4S have told the BBC the company has given them little information.

One caller to BBC Radio 5live, Jane, from Manchester, said she had heard nothing from G4S since April.

"I had an interview in March and I had training for a security licence in April, and then since then there has been very little information about what actually the job role is," she said.

"I have had no job training. I don't even know where I'm going to work, or what kind of work its going to be or when it's going to start."

G4S may well employing some right undesirables (not "Jane", of course) .....

The (re-assigned) army will not be protecting the UK, but just the sponsors investment and the Tory Governments interests .....

People recruited by security company G4S to work during the Olympics have spoken of anger and disappointment over their treatment.

The company is being paid £300m to supply 10,000 guards for the Games, but the BBC understands it cannot now bring in that number.

Anger has been growing for weeks among those involved in G4S's recruitment process.

Nosa Eghobamien, 19, from Watford, has been told that she both has and has not got a job.

She was trained, then told her application had not been accepted, then told to collect her uniform, but earlier was told she is still being screened.

She said: "I was so excited to work there.

"It makes me upset and not want to watch the Olympics knowing I could have been working there."

Mike Curtis, of High Wycombe, said his daughter had also been left disappointed.

He said: "She initially undertook training and received a contract to be one of the security staff some time ago, but then received no further information until she received an email at short notice with details of a final training day."

She was unable to attend.

"No alternatives were provided and it was impossible to contact anyone at G4S," he added.

One parent told the BBC that many young people had taken time out of studying for A-levels to complete training for jobs they had not been given.

She said: "For a lot of young people this is their first employment. They are distraught and angry."

Darius Athill, from London, described a "long and laborious" process after applying for a job months ago.

"I went for an interview and was sent for security vetting. I was then told I had passed screening and vetting and that I would hear back from them.

"I was sent contracts and given a login to a website, which didn't work. After calling a helpline and waiting hours to get through they had no idea what I was talking about."

Chris, from London, said: "I was offered the role of team leader.

"I have now been actively chasing G4S for two months and every time I have called I have been told I will be contacted shortly to arrange training and that I should be patient."

Labour's Tessa Jowell said on Wednesday there was "clearly a serious problem".
