Default Religion at it again...

FIVE THOUSAND buffalo lie slaughtered at the beginning of Hindu ceremony

Hundreds of thousands of animals set to be slaughtered during two-day religious festival in Nepal

The Hindu festival is held every five years in honour of Gadhimai, the goddess of power

Festivities kicked off on Friday morning with the mass-slaughter of 5,000-6,000 buffalo in a field

The last time the festival was held, in 2009, more than 250,000 animals were killed, according to PETA

Welcome to religion......

Hey - Welcome to the HINDU religion. My religion eats a wafer and takes a sip of wine. Not a buffalo in sight.

I'm pretty sure this isn't condoned by the religion.. my friend is a Hindu and is also very supportive of animal rights, this would really anger her.

You took the words right out of my mouth Kaz - that was going to be my next response to LT. He'll not 'buy it' anyway no matter how persuasive your argument.

They had an interview with some guy who was part of all this and he was talking about how he loved it and it was as easy as cutting vegetables.

Call me a naive city boy but how someone can look another sentient being in the eye before gleefully severing it's head from it's spinal cord just doesn't sit right with me. If I had to kill an animal for food (I would have to be desperate first) the last thing I would be feeling would be happiness.

They've got some catching up to do! In the UK we slaughter 8200 cows every single day. Amateurs! And when it comes to piggies, forget about it, we slice 'n' dice a cool 25000 of those every day.

Not to leave out Mr Chicken. We kill 250,000 of those ****ers a day. That's nearly 3 every second. We're basically awesome at it.

Unbelievable. They should freeze all that meat and feed people. There are millions of people starving in India.India as a country needs get their priorities right.Like maybe feed the people before having a space program and slaughtering thousands of cattle for fun. This makes fox hunting look like weekend fishing.

..yeah, this is fairly awful but I do believe that only half the amount of animals were slaughtered compared to the last time, which was 5 years ago and many people were arrested as they crossed the borders, so awareness is being raised about it and the authorities are doing something/taking steps to ban it...still wrong I know but those steps are at least moving forward and I imagine there are lots of traditions/rituals/festivals etc in many parts of the world that we would be horrified by but sadly still take place...and the meat is exported to India and eaten..animals being slaughtered every day for food is a fact of life and some meat eaters don't ever question how that meat is slaughtered..

..anyway, although I don't condone this at all and hope the ban on it becomes enough to stop it completely at some time in the future... 5000 animals would equate to less than 3 a day over 5 years..?.. which is how often the ritual occurs and it's each person bringing one of their own reared animals and after slaughtering, it being used as a food source at least....I believe that RSPCA calls/reports of animal cruelty and neglect etc which also include many deaths are around one every 30 seconds in the UK..I don't know what statistics of similar organisations in other countries are... and some of these cases include torture as well and for no 'tradition/belief' at all...no religious factor whatsoever but sometimes just for 'LOLS'...and no 'mouths being fed' by these cruel owner's actions....

It seems to fly in the face of the Hindu 'sacred cow' honoured for its selflessness.
Totally heartbreaking scenes there

Dreadful scenes. Food for thought, I wonder if there will ever come a day when the animals slaughter humans to such an extent?
