Arrow Star Trek: Discovery - [Netflix series] Alex Kurtzman to take over as showrunner

CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

The new program will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS’s current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series.

The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Alex Kurtzman will serve as executive producer for the new Star Trek TV series. Kurtzman co-wrote and produced the blockbuster films Star Trek (2009) with Roberto Orci, and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) with Orci and Damon Lindelof. Both films were produced and directed by J.J. Abrams.

The new series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Kurtzman and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers. Kurtzman is also an executive producer for the hit CBS television series Scorpion and Limitless, along with Kadin and Orci, and for Hawaii Five-0 with Orci.

Star Trek, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016, is one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time. The original Star Trek spawned a dozen feature films and five successful television series. Almost half a century later, the Star Trek television series are licensed on a variety of different platforms in more than 190 countries, and the franchise still generates more than a billion social media impressions every month.

Born from the mind of Gene Roddenberry, the original Star Trek series debuted on Sept. 8, 1966 and aired for three seasons – a short run that belied the influence it would have for generations. The series also broke new ground in storytelling and cultural mores, providing a progressive look at topics including race relations, global politics and the environment.

“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”

“This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before – directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access,” said Marc DeBevoise, Executive Vice President/General Manager – CBS Digital Media. “We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”

“Every day, an episode of the Star Trek franchise is seen in almost every country in the world,” said Armando Nuñez, President and CEO, CBS Global Distribution Group. “We can’t wait to introduce Star Trek's next voyage on television to its vast global fan base.”

CBS All Access offers its customers more than 7,500 episodes from the current television season, previous seasons and classic shows on demand nationwide, as well as the ability to stream local CBS stations live in more than 110 markets. Subscribers can use the service online and across devices via CBS.com, the CBS App for iOS, Android and Windows 10, as well as on connected devices such as Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku players and Roku TV, with more connected devices to come.

The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.

Yep, in fact if it is the new universe, it leaves a lot of mystery for the new crew to discover, I'm just glad they're not gonna focus on Kirk, Kirk is cool, but he's not the only cool captain in Star Trek lol.

Sorry.

Other than Bakula as the lead and few story lines, i found it quite flat.

Next Generation is my personal favorite and i really like the Original Series too.

Hmm, apparently CBS owns the right to the old universe, while Paramount owns the rights to the new universe. Sounds like this might be set in the old universe.

Enterprise suffered from having a lack of identity for the first two series, hell, it wasnt called "Star Trek Enterprise" til S3

DS9 is great cause it shows the darker side of the Federation, and there's the Dominion War too.
TNG is great because it's the opposite of DS9, but still does a bunch of set up for the Dominion War and the Borg
Voyger is decent, but suffers from not having the ship change throughout the series

If it's set in the Prime Universe, they should have the new ship head to the Andromeda Galaxy (ala Mass Effect Andromeda)

It would be good to have another female captain. I imagine some big reveals about the show will happen next year, likely during the anniversary celebrations. Honestly, I thought earlier this week they'd announce this series then.

So I've been looking into the production history of Star Trek, basically, it seems pretty likely that this new series will be set in the old universe alongside TOS, TNG, DS9 ect. the new movie universe is Paramount's thing, and was mainly made because Paramount don't have the rights to add new characters into the old franchise. CBS apparently blocked JJ Abrahms from making a TV show set in the new universe (thank god)

I agree, 25th Century seems the right place for it, the new series needs to distance itself from the TNG era, just like TNG did with TOS. Basically, it needs to be The Next Next Generation, lol

Quote:
During a earnings report conference call with reporters today, CBS Corporation's president and CEO Les Moonves talked for a bit about the decision to launch STAR TREK: SERIES SIX on the online streaming service CBS All Access rather than on broadcast television.

"A lot of conversation went into what we were going to do [with the new show]."

While stressing that CBS will continue to supply other content to both Netflix and Hulu, Moonves described the Star Trek franchise as the "family jewel" for their ongoing business.

"We're looking to do original content on All Access and build up that platform. Netflix is our friend, [but] a competitor. They compete with Showtime [which is a CBS holding]. All Access will put out original content and knowing the loyalty of "Star Trek" fans, this will boost it.

There's about a billion channels out there and because of "Star Trek," people will know what All Access is about."

Moonves continued, discussing the international plans for extended distribution.

"All the series have done well in terms of streaming. Added in to that, "Star Trek" is a huge international franchise. Our international distribution guy is going crazy; he can't wait to get out to the marketplace and sell that.

Right away, we're more than halfway home on the cost of the show from international alone. The risk is small in seeing the track record. We think it'll be great and bring in a lot more subscribers. We're really excited about it.

[The new show is] world-class effort that will make all "Star Trek" fans proud."

Source: The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline Hollywood

* * *

Of course, Star Trek is no stranger to new distribution methods.

The abandoned Star Trek: Phase II sequel series was intended to be the cornerstone of a never-formed Paramount Television network, a move repeated in 1995 when UPN started on the back of Star Trek: Voyager. 1987's Star Trek: The Next Generation, of course, was a groundbreaking example of a produced-for-syndication series sold directly to location stations in the United States, bypassing the standard broadcast model.

Specific non-US distribution plans have not been finalized or announced yet, but yesterday's announcement from CBS does indicate that some form of streaming and television availability will be part of the release of SERIES SIX.

We've got lots still ahead of us in this new adventure -- so hang on as we start the first new Trek adventure in years.
Trek Core

Interesting that it's being officially refered to as "Series Six", seems to hint that it will be a coninuation. I'm not worried about it being streaming only in America, like Doctor Who makes more abroad than it does in the UK, the same is true for Star Trek and the rest of the world, this new show will sell like hotcakes to networks around the world.

CBS' recently announced Star Trek series will have Fuller serving as co-creator and executive producer. The veteran of the Star Trek universe launched his writing career on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.

The new series will be available exclusively in the U.S. to fans who have signed up with CBS All Access. The service includes all episodes from the franchise on demand, including Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Star Trek: Enterprise. It's the first original series developed for the network's subscriber services. Launch is set for early 2017.

"My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls," reminisced Fuller, who you can follow on Twitter. "Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire." He tweeted a photo as his own announcement that he's joining the series:

Fuller's got a Number One who also has a loyal legacy with Star Trek. Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman will help lead the new series after working on the franchise's recent movies, as Producer and Writer on Star Trek Into Darkness and Executive Producer and Writer on Star Trek.

"Bringing Star Trek back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care," said Kurtzman. "His encyclopedic knowledge of Trek canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds."

"Bryan is not only an extremely gifted writer, but a genuine fan of Star Trek," said David Stapf, President of CBS Television Studios. "Having someone at the helm with his gravitas who also understands and appreciates the significance of the franchise and the worldwide fan base was essential to us."

Recently, Fuller served as executive producer and writer on NBC's Hannibal, based on the characters from the book Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. Fuller also created the critically acclaimed series Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls. He served as writer and co-executive producer on the first season of Heroes before leaving to create the Emmy Award-winning Pushing Daisies. Fuller is currently executive producing along with partner Michael Green an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods for the STARZ network.

Heather Kadin will also serve as an Executive Producer.
Good choice imo, especially given that he worked on 81 Voyager episodes
