Default So I'm probably having teeth out tomorrow...

Terrified.

Broken fillings (that have in turn broken my teeth) that I neglected getting seen to due to a period of depression/being housebound that have lead to chronic abscesses.

Tomorrow is my first appointment with a new dentist and am terrified.

Anyone else absolutely HATE the dentist!? I'd rather have brain surgery no lie

I had loads of work done when I was a kid due to an accident when I was little so the dentist doesn't bother me. I would rather have a tooth out than have my eyes tested.....now that I hate, opticians get far too up in my personal space .

Explain to the dentist that you are nervous, they will be used to nervous patients and they will ensure that it is as pain free as possible. In the long run you will have far less trouble if you sort it now.

Good luck

Thanks guys!

I'm nervous but just eager to get it done with, or at least something done even if I have to make a few visits.

The hardest part is the wait really and making that first step of going.

Nothing they can do to me can be worse than the pain of an abscess, and I've had a few of those recently sadly, so I'm hoping it will be somewhat of a relief.

I'm actually more embarrassed to show my three broken teeth than nervous about the procedures

I used to be nervous about going to the dentist but when I got braces I practically lived there so it wore off. The rewarding feeling once you've got it over with is far greater than the nerves beforehand too. As for being embarrassed just think it's their job to see messed up teeth they probably deal with similar cases everyday so I wouldn't worry about it.

I used to hate the dentists until I got braces then regular orthandontist appointments just kind of got me used to it.

Good luck. What used to comfort me was thinking that going to a dentist appointment is just an everyday thing.

I dreaded having my root canal done...but I left feeling absolutely fine. I remember being laid there as the dentist was getting to work feeling bored outta my mind

The build-up is always worse - you'll be fine

I had 3 out for braces. The worst part is the anesthetic injections tbh.

Good luck

It's worth it when the work is finally done, Jonnii. It's get expensive fast though... not gonna lie... that's the real "pain" imo. But yeah, I second the injections being the most uncomfortable part...

it's all down to the dentist. Get a good dentist and its a walk in the park no matter what they do. My dentist is absolutely great, took me years to find him, and it literally costs a fortune, but it's worth it.

....awww, you’re terrified Jonnie, of course you are.....but even though you’re terrified, even though making that appointment has filled your anxieties so much...you still made the appointment and you’re still facing those great fears, you have..that’s a huge step and you’ve made it......incredible, amazing you, eh...everything else is going to just be another step but nothing as scary as you’ve already overcome in making that appointment and going to the dentist...which you will...

... you have some discomfort still to come in your treatment...?...but that discomfort, that journey ...is going to lead somewhere with no broken fillings, with no abscesses etc...it’s really going to improve life quality for you...so it’s entirely different from the journey in the reasons your teeth deteriorated, you know...it’s not only going to give you a pain free and beautiful smile...but it’s also going to give you a feeling of...yeah, I did that, I made that happen...I beat those darn fears despite how great and overwhelming they were...I’m pretty darn cool, I’m Jonnie......

I feel your pain Jonnii I hate the dentist... the whole terrifying prospect of walking into the waiting room, smelling that small, being called in.... Those things are all undoubtedly worse than the actual treatment because once I'm in the chair I do relax a bit and I hope you do too.

Thanks for all the comments guys!

I've been, no treatment done today. Just the initial check and x-ray and then she told me what I need to have.

4 teeth out and then just 4 small white fillings (no drilling or anything). She said it would have been 3 teeth out originally but the abscess I had has started to affect a tooth next to the affected tooth, so to save me heartache in future it's easier to just get it out now.

Only bummer is - have to wait until beginning of September for it done! The wait will drive me mad. Really hope my abscesses don't flare up in the mean time otherwise I will have to book emergency!

Jonni...you got to force yourself to go..not just for your teeth but for you..you will feel accomplished if you go and will wonder what all the fuss was about.

Anyway, good luck with your health in the future...try n stay positive.

I have a terrible fear of the dentist so I go to a practice that specialises solely in nervous patients.

You done the right thing going though so well done to you for that and at least the first steps out the way now, just a pity you have to wait so long to get the treatment done but hey once its done its done.

Root canal is wayyyy worse than extraction

I had root canal in 2014 and they ended up extracting the tooth anyway so it was all completely pointless

Extractions are honestly not that bad imo like with root canal they literally shove a tiny metal pole full of spikes INSIDE your tooth ugh it’s beyond grim

I think implants are the worst personally. The dentist uses a hammer to put them in like a self tapping screw

Yeah every single person I've ever known have a root canal have ended up having that tooth out in the long run, be it months or years later.

I think the thought is worse than anything (the pulling, crunching, blood), I had a tooth out about 6 years ago and I've blocked the whole thing from my memory... I remember being numbed and sent to the waiting room for a while, then that's it. All I remember after that is being back at uni the next day. Which makes me think if it was awful it would have surely stuck with me.
