Default Do you grow your own veg/fruit/herbs?

If so, what do you grow?

I’ve just done my seeds for butternut squash, carrots, beetroot, spring onions, various chillis, sunflowers, basil, dill and rocket.

Thought I had tomato seeds still but alas I did not. So sadly I was forced to buy some today and accidentally popped some tarragon, spaghetti squash and more chilli seeds in my basket.

Will do potatoes and garlic soon.

No I would like to but we are not at home enough, and I could not trust my son to water them so would be a waste, he just about keeps Tilly alive

…herbs, yes…vegetables not so much…I have a friend who grows lots of vegetables and she often throws some my way in season…we’re just starting our garden ‘from scratch’ atm as we only moved in last year and it’s still to be developed so haven’t yet got all of the planting sorted and planned etc…

I've got quite a few fruit trees, apples, pears and plums. Every year I say I'm going to have a go at growing veg but in reality I have other calls on my time. I grow tomatoes and a few herbs.

Oooh nice. Most of those should be fairly easy. Tomatoes can be a bugger sometimes. You got a greenhouse?

I have 2 massive apple trees in the garden that produce huge cooking apples but I can never be bothered collecting them so they just fall and go rotten, a perfect analogy of my life tbh

I got a little one for just the tomatoes. I did try to grow tomatoes around covid time, they grew fine but they were decimated by woodlice. I think I ended up with about 3 edible ones. It's a different area this time though so I'm hoping it won't happen again

Yeah tomatoes can get nailed by insects. Mine are still inside at the moment as I grew them from seed, and not strong enough to be outside quite yet.

Some of my closest friends are into preparedness, but I had a man recently talk to me at the supermarket about tomatoes. He said he had some small ones at home and the ones we were looking at in the shop were massive. "I think they're going to be massive like these". A nice conversation.

It's becoming more common I think.

I'm not ready yet. I have way too much going on to pick up Farming 101, but I have been growing some mint in my kitchen that I'm letting go wild. I've built cedar planters in the past and I have some materials I bought to make one, but just going to put wildflowers in for it. Who knows, maybe i'll be converted to some food... but I think if I do that, there's a silly divot in my yard from where a tree used to be that's mostly level-ish... but I think if I do food I'll build something rather large there and plant. I do have dogs so have to be concerned there... and squirrels... lots and lots of squirrels...

I would say try potatoes as they are so easy to grow, but they are poisonous to dogs, especially the leaves.

I'm going to see how I go with this lot as a trial run but the aim is to get a polytunnel in a year or 2
