Default Stinking Strike by French Block British Tourists

Fuming: French fishermen use burning tyres
to block entry to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer
in protest against fishing quotas

We need to get out of this €uro Laws mess.

Lorries on the M20 near Ashford in Kent,
as Operation Stack is enforced as French fishermen strike
outside the port of Calais in France

"typical french style! They want to sell their wines to other countries, but they dont want other countries to sell their fish to france. I think we should retaliate and stop buying french goods.
- Aussie Sheila, Sydney, 15/4/20"

A great post by a Good Lady
from Down Under.

'Typical French style' is true: we kinda love to make strikes, it's in our nature and it's being accepted by everyone.
The story is more complicated than that, it's deeper. Fishermen have always been living in poverty, financial crisis or not. They couldn't live on a daily basis with what they caught and how much they sell the fishes. They already asked for a bigger quota, they got it last year: +30%.
For them, it was enough last year but not anymore due to the crisis: they raise the fishes price, no one is buying so they ask to fish more and make the fishes cheaper (that's logic).
However, the government said they won't raise the quotas but will give the fishermen a financial aid, to keep them warm.
Obviously they refused and the strike began. So both parts are right but they are wrong too. Same story over and over again.

To respond to Sheila, it's not about wine and fishes, the issue has always been there and stopping importations from France is stupid, it will not solve the issue.
(And why is it an Australian women complaining when obviously Australia is on the other part of the world and the ports are in Northern France ? Funny lol)

Arista, it's your turn lol

lol are Harry and arista the same person?... "New Labour Depression"?

Remy that aussie was a tourist like the rest. Her point is fair.. a lot of French markets are blocked to the rest of the world by tarrifs... how would the French like it if the rest of the world were equally as protectionist.
re fisherman ... fishing more would rape the fish stocks meaning that in 2 or 3 years they're won't be enough fish around to keep the fish population going. That's the whole point of the international quota system... it's not about the government being mean to fisherman it's about nations agreeing to NOT over fish so that there will be enough to reproduce and re stock the population.

re strike culture. Remy explain the importance of strikes and demonstration to Arista. It's an important part of a democracy that people get out march about what they believe in. Greece is the same. Arista seems to think that some tourists being inconvenienced is more important than people's livelihoods.

It's not about being protectionist, you know France is not. It's a simple strike and it's the only way fishermen have found to get their point across. Like I said, both parts are wrong and both are right in a way so I'm not defending anyone.

Watch out your language please. Just because I don't want to live there, doesn't mean I like French people being insulted as 'frogs' and 'stinking French'. I'm sure you wouldn't like me to say 'roast beefs' or 'stinking gingers' ?

Arista, I guess you don't understand the point of a strike because it's less common in UK. Here, we're used to it and we work it well. I'm not saying it's always the best solution, but it proved to be working.
And good for you if you hate us, you've always had something against France and I can't help it, but at least, be nice, no need to insult. It won't get your point across.

sorry dude... subsidising food production workers, whether they are farmers or fisherman is a form of protectionism. I'm not saying all protectionism is wrong and I'm clueless about whether these farmers are or not but the aussie tourist had a point. Having said that if she knew what was at stake she wouldn't moan about losing a day of her holidays.

The European Union subsidises food production workers, not France. There is a huge difference there. 80% of the European budget is aimed at the food production workers. So yet the debate has changed.

when I say France ... read EU. Goes without saying :P ... does the aussie tourist have a point or not? If the rest of the world were as protectionist as the EU are you'd be screwed. That was her point. Disagree with her if you like but EU subsidies are the always a point of argument at every world economic forum.African's and african markets are the real losers due to these policies.

I am against Europe and everything it involves so to me, France is France. Not EU.

If we're talking about EU then I agree, she has a fair point. However, EU isn't illegal when doing this, they're not that protectionists to get sanctions from the WTO.
I also agree that it's always the same issue over and over again and it won't be solved in a while...knowing the current economical situation.
