Is it Rascist to call someone "Black", for example, if you were at a party, and forgotton someones name, would it be acceptable to say, "What do you call him, no no, not him, the black man?"

What do you think?

Are we presuming there is only one "black man" at this party?

I meant as in you were pointing in the general direction of a black man, then the person you were talking to thought you were asking the name of the white man (say they were both talking)

I think it depends on the way you say it, same with calling white people white.

I hate it when people tell you off for saying something like the black guy? we were told in school once that you should describe them by what they are wearing and not thier colour? which makes noe sence cause we all wear the same thing?

How would you distinguish someone from a group of white people?

Enid

Surely you'd just be describing the guy whose name you had forgotten?

It's stupid when people tip toe around issues like this. Would it be better to say "that guy whose skin is of a darker tone" or "the guy that isn't white"?

It isn't racist to call someone black, because that is what they are, no?

depends on the situation. I'd only call them a black person anyway if that was a distinguishing feature, just like a blond haired person in a group of people with brown hair, a woman with a load of men or a shorter person amongst taller people.

I might say "the blonde woman" or the "short guy" or "the guy in the white jacket". I suppose everyone is different.

That would be highly unlikely. Same would go for black or white though don't you think? I mean, if they all had the same hair they were all the same size and they were all wearing the same outfit and they were all black or white, then what would you do?

I would just say 'Black' person... black people are not offended or embarrassed at the fact they are black, and will not be offended if you call them black. Therefore just call them black, I am sure they have noticed and got used to the fact their skin colour is of a certain colour.

Exactly. People these days are so scared of offending others, they are now worried about whether describing someone as "black" is the political correct term to use.

Has anyone seen the episode of Extras where Maggie dates a black guy, but in the end drives him away because she's so scared of saying anything that could be portrayed as racist? This reminds me of that.

Never fear a black guy is here

I wouldn't care if someone identified me as being "the black person", nor would any of my friends that are black.

I get more offended when I get called African, just because I have the same color skin as most Africans, doesn't mean I am one. It's a bit like calling an English caucasian Polish.

Coloured and N*gger are the worst.

Things are changing year by year when i was growing up in the 70s i was never described as Black, it was deemed offensive, almost as if being Black was offensive, Coloured was used instead. More and more though people are accepting Black as purely a descriptive term and when i hear a White person say "the Black guy over their" it makes me think back at how it use to be and makes me a tad bit proud to be English.

that's the same with my BF we were at a party (it was quiet rough) he can't called an "African Monkey" because he got served before this t wat

he didn't mind the monkey part he thought that was quiet funny but being called African really offended him

another time i got told of by some random woman for describing my BF has half cast and was told "it's bi-racial or mixed race" to which i said "i'll call my bf what i like"

I'm black and no I do't mind being called black. I just don't like when its too pronouced with in the sentence. I.E the BLACK man over there. Next time you here someone make references to black people lsiten to how they exaggerate the word above all the words.

Nice thread, and it hasn't descended into chaos either which says a lot of good things about this place :)

'Fro, i have heard a few people upset about the term half caste, and i want to add my pennies worth.
I'm 30 years old, went to a school with a massive cross section of all ethnicities and religions, and the term half cast was used by mixed race folks for themselves. Nobody considered it offensive in the least. It was just another descriptive word, the same as black is. About 5 years ago i spoke to a mixed race girl and she mentioned her mom was white, her dad black, and i said, completely innocently " ohhh you're half caste". She was shocked. I had no idea why and i was upset that i had upset her. We had a talk about it and we were both ok at the end of it, but i guess my point is that things are always subject to change, and if anyone uses that term, then it is not necessarily from a bad place. It's an old word that has just become out of fashion. Consider the age of the person who uses the term, before you get too upset.
There was a time when Gay men were called Queens. Another example of how a word becomes outdated. It's all a matter of intent i think.
