That's a Dublinism.

It's just on a par with calling him 'whatshisname' or 'yer man' (another Irish expression).

There's nothing more to it than that - she just didn't want to say his name because she didn't want to be overheard talking about him by other HMs I guess.

Well that hjas to be the first time Noirin has said anything sensible...Marcus is a thing...as well as the daddy of all stalking bunny boilers!

Marcus is a typical example of a groomer
She is scared of him and thinks she needs him at the same time
Noirin is just a typical victim - low self esteem and needs her self worth bolstering with compliments - thinks she's a sexy body and nothing else
Needs a man to do her thinking and protecting
As to whether she is attracted to the man is of no consequence He serves his purpose

and then did her little "her..her...her" laugh

Well said! If I was Noirin I wouldn't let Marcus have my address. He may well turn out to be a Barry George type of scary man.

Sorry but it's an Irish "thing" , it's meant not as an insult, alot of Irish people say this when they can't think of someones name or don't want to mention it

She's Irish, and it's an Irish phrase, it's not meant the way you're making out. We always say it, like "I told thingy that I wasn't going out".... etc.

Your example is in diiferent context and essentially a different word.

Would you still use 'Thing' and in the context that Noirin used it?

Yes it is very much an Irish experssion. In a village or city in Ireland and if you are talking to someone about a person whose name you can't remember off your head (or whose name you remember, but don't want to mention) you will often find that you will say "Have you seen thingamygiggy today?" It is not meant as an insult.

Ah, I'm after watching it again and whoever posted this thread is making something outta nothing. She wasn't referring to Marcus as a thing..... if she said thing about Marcus then it would be definitely a derogatory remark.

I think she meant "thing" as in the whole situation involving Marcus, Tom and everything. It wasn't a remark on Marcus.... just the problems in the house involving him and Tom for Noirin.

Now if she had said thing over there.... referring to just Marcus alone- that would definitely be the actions of a "witch". You don't say things like that to somebody you know and behind their backs.

Noirin was going to the diary room after chatting with Siavash. Siavash seemed concerned that Noirin was going in to talk about him and what they had been discussing.

Noirin said to Siavash

"It's not you...it's thing"

I think she was just referring to the whole situation, not just Marcus in particular. Don't get me wrong now.... I'm not defending Noirin..... I despise the girl but in this incident I don't think she was just talking about Marcus. If she was then that's a different matter.

Oh it would be insulting up here if you said thing about somebody, especially if they're not in the room. That's terribly derogatory. It's ok if they're in the room and you're taking the p£ss outta them.... but no- you'd never say that about anyone. I'm talking about the word thing here, not thingy.

I was there on tuesday - and I lived there for the first 26 years of my life - I dunno where you hang out but everyone I know uses 'thing' and 'thingy' in exactly the same way as they would use 'yer man' or 'whatshisname' - exactly the same.

Examples:
Friend A: "I haven't seen thing in ages"
Friend B: "Who?"
Friend A: "You know thing... with the hair!"
Friend B: "Oh her!"

Friend A: "So, do you fancy thing?"
Friend B: "No!"
Friend A: "But you said he was fit"
Friend B: "Oh.. thing, I thought you meant yer man"

Honestly, have you just walked outta the Snapper or the Commitments? Thing is not used as readily as you think it is and it all has to do with context. She knows Marcus well at this stage and to call him thing would be an insult.

I've worked and lived in Dublin area all my life and you never refer to anyone you know as thing. In this example with Noirin she was just talking about the whole situation.... the "thing".

I'm from Clare and 'thing' is very often used when you can't think of someones name - see the fab examples above from Ooo_get_her.
I think in this case she could have meant either marcus or the whole conversation she'd just had, but none of it was meant in a vindictive way.

I used to visit my friend who was studying in the city.... mad sessions. Pretty kippy nightclub down there too. Wow, flashback city here.

Cork City is gone a bit rough now, especially on a Saturday night so i tend to stay away from the clubs, more of a late bar girl anway

That's a Dublinism.

It's just on a par with calling him 'whatshisname' or 'yer man' (another Irish expression).

There's nothing more to it than that - she just didn't want to say his name because she didn't want to be overheard talking about him by other HMs I guess. Rubbish

It's not rubbish, it's true!!! MYy Father in law is from Ireland ,its RUBBISH

she's actually saying she thinks it could have been used in either way but would not have been vindictive anyway

Yeah, i know that now... reread it. lol. Nah, she's wrong.... it's a derogatory statement to make if you're talking about a friend.

I'm the same.... bit too mad for me now out in the wilds. Think it's getting like that everywhere. Much prefer waffling in a late bar.

Dee-four and Daawky don't really count as Dublin there, Quentin

Oooo_get_her.... I've worked in bars in Dublin and lived in area all my life. I know what I'm talking about with regard to the Dublin use of words and you are taking it completely out of context. Referring to a friend as a thing is a total insult..... end of really.

I think you're using Roddy Doyles books and films as a reference guide to all the Dublin colloquialisms without really understanding when and where they're used. I've never heard thing used in relation to a friend. It's just not done.

Dude - calm down about this - you're getting your knickers in a knot.

I have no idea why you think Roddy Doyle has anything to do with this. If you're questioning my authenticity as a Dub, well, you can feck off. I'm not partaking in a 'plastic paddy' context where we exchange Irishism and phrases from fecking Peig! You want to win the 'Dub of the ThisisBigBrother Forum' award - have it - I hope it makes you happy.

No one, btw, is talking about '[r]eferring to a friend as a thing' - the expression in question is 'thing' - not 'a thing'. I agree completely that had N said 'It's not about you - it's that thing' or 'It's not about you - it's the thing' then it would have been an insult - but what she said was 'It's not about you - it's [pause] thing' - Clearly she didn't want to say his name, so she said 'thing' instead, which is something I have heard time and time again. You. it seems, haven't. That's life - shall we move on?

I haven't got my knickers in a knot at all. You obviously have if it's taken you over an hour to reply to me over something that I've basically forgotten.

Your examples of the usage of thing have really no relevance to what we've been discussing. Think you just put them in to prove it's used which I haven't denied. My point is it's rarely used in relation to a friend, unless to cause offense. She used it in this example to illustrate just the whole problem...not just about Marcus himself- if she had it would have been to insult him.

There's a few knacks who might use it still but it's not a prevalent as you suggest and rarely used in reference to someone you know. And don't forget, Noirin is from the southside.

The Real capital you mean hehehehehehe:wink:

Ah, lets not get into that. Cork is good fun . I'm more partial to Galway myself though.

I love Galway too, Oh My God, we actually agree on something!!!!!!

Galway's great, but go a bit further west and your in Heaven.
