View Full Version : Is 'redneck' acceptable?

The_Long_Run

In modern usage, redneck predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of whites from the Southern United States. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.

The redneck stereotype:
The term redneck is seen by some people to be both racist and classist, as it is was originally used to describe a person of pale skin that has been sunburned doing outdoor work or field work, and disproportionately applies to the poor. Today, a redneck is a stereotypical southern United States socially conservative, fiscally liberal, rural, working class white person with northern European ancestry.

The original meaning = no.

Todays meaning = a little more acceptable.

No - she also called him a pikey. Her and Freddie both proceeded to have a smug little laugh about Lisa's life and the fact that she is on benefits when Freddie is as much a scrounger as she is as he he doesn't have a job.

It's blatant snobbism. Words like 'redneck' and 'pikey' imply someone of a low class.

As someone who was born in the southern US...

A redneck isn't a racial stereotype at all, in fact there are people who are proud to be rednecks (most of them, I'd say). "White trash" would be a racial sterotype, but redneck could apply to someone of any race. A redneck is, generally speaking, someone who is "country." Someone who likes Nascar and monster trucks. They usually like country music, guns and hunting.

Oh... I just thought of an example. Dukes of Hazard. Every character on that show was a redneck.

Isaac is not a redneck in any sense of the word. Not at all. He is just an arsehole. A funny arsehole when he puts his mind to it, but an arsehold all the same.

Where I'm from there are plenty of rednecks who earn ten times what I make. The term redneck is used across North America, btw. In Canada it applies to anyone from "the West."

Some are proud of being "redneck." The term has been reclaimed a bit lately much like "*****" or "queer". The positive spin is that people from "redneck" areas are friendly, loyal, unpretentious, and hard-working.

Of course I know some who are vile racist morons, so there you go.

1 - Jewish people are white (In most cases) - its a religion not race.
2 - All jewish people being rich is a sterotype - so dont start saying thye cant call him a redneck then go and say that.

Uh.... there are rednecks that are jews, catholics, baptists, athiests, etc. There are rednecks that are black, white, asian, American Indian, etc. There are rednecks that are rich and poor and in between. There are rednecks that are well educated. There are rednecks that quit school at age 12. Like I said above, think about the Dukes of Hazard. Everyone from Boss Hogg to Uncle Jesse is a redneck.

And redneck ABSOLUTELY is not the same as calling someone a ni**er. Get that right out of your mind.

But... Isaac is still not a redneck. However, Bea admitted that she wasn't sure what it meant.

I have friends from North Carolina and they are proud to call themselves rednecks! Rednecks to them is not an insult as most people over there use it to describe someone who is from the country.

However Bea admitted she didn't even know what the term 'redneck' meant, and it obviously was meant to be an insult so I would suggest she learns what words actually means in future before she uses them.

Also Marcus mentioned the word 'pikey' and that is a totally different thing to redneck.

Nice stereotype. Jewish people arent lazy in the sligtest and good asset to any nation.

The stereotype doesn't mean that the have money because they work hard. Its about the fact that in times gone past Jewish people were the only money lenders as it wasn't allowed by Christians. Thats why they are portrayed as money seeking.

That comment is actually worse than the one you are appalled by.

If you would have read everything she said, she admits that Bea used the word as an insult to Isaac even if she wasn't sure what it meant.

And rappers using the N word is not the same as rednecks using the term "redneck." The word "redneck" was never used as a hate word like the N word was. Redneck describes a country lifestyle. The N word was used to degrade black people.

"Their hair is generally worn in the mullet style, and they favor long sideburns. Personal hygiene is a lost concept with the stereotypical redneck, and what teeth they have left generally show the complete anthology of the stages of dental caries. Their favorite activities include hunting, shooting at road signs and lights, professional wrestling, NASCAR, monster truck rallies, car engine repair, collecting junked cars and large appliances on their lawns, having way too many children and dogs, participating in domestic disturbances, and waiting around for their welfare checks. Country and Southern Rock bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd figure in as their preferred genre of music."

I was not raised in a redneck atmosphere, however, my father's brother is 100% redneck. He has all of his teeth. He used to be a Sheriff but now works for the US government by flying to disaster sites and helping there (a VERY good job). He likes Nascar. He likes to fish and hunt. He has the equipment to make his own bullets and shotgun shells for the hunting. He has a Gold Wing motorcycle (a VERY redneck motorcycle) which he takes on trips. Here is a pic of a Goldwing like his:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GoldWing.jpg
He is VERY much a country boy. And yet he has a good job, good hygiene and no children. His lawn is well maintained with no junk cars or anything else. Some rednecks really compete with each other when it comes to perfect green lawns, trust me!

Oh heavens, I forgot all about the grilling! My uncle can cook an entire meal on the grill. And he is always smoking turkeys or brisket etc.

I'm afraid that I haven't watched King of the Hill in ages. So I'm not sure about the other characters.

It's blatant snobbism. Words like 'redneck' and 'pikey' imply someone of a low class.

Definitely out of order for Freddie to sneer at unemployed as who knows where he would have been today if he hadn't been born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Everything has been given to him - he hasn't had to earn it - that is obvious. He personally can't take credit for family wealth!

The stereotype doesn't mean that the have money because they work hard. Its about the fact that in times gone past Jewish people were the only money lenders as it wasn't allowed by Christians. Thats why they are portrayed as money seeking.

That comment is actually worse than the one you are appalled by.

They can be 2 seperate statements, and not necessarily linked. Your assumption could be classed as a subconscious racist slur.

I get a lot of Jewish slurs against me even though I am not Jewish, but I do support Tottenham that is known as a jewish club (fans even call themselves the Yid Army). I asked if it was an innocent comment or not, the response seemed to be that it was not an innocent comment. So now I could be classed as being subconsciously racist because I questioned someone on a dodgy comment?
Because the initial question asked about redneck being acceptable to use as a label, and some responses have inferred that redneck is also a class issue, low income etc, so therefore, i read it as being 2 seperate statements responding to the redneck question. (now breathe) The way you read it was to immediately ponder on it's innocence. That there has been an issue raised, means you are very aware of the links regarding Jewish folk, and their financial status. Sometimes, comments can be read the wrong way, i just wanted to point it out.

.....I just like interferring in arguments, call me Bea  :thumbs2:

Thats a complete barrel of wan k.

There are in history many many example examples of Christian money lending, the easiest one to use is the Knights Templar. It is agreed by historians that one of the reasons for their demise was because the King of France was up to his eyeballs in debt to the KT, they refused further credit to be used for financing his war against England. So he used his influence with the French born Pope to instigate the heresy charges.

The reasons why Jews became associated with money lending etc is because they were ostracised from society most professions by local rulers, the church and the guilds, they were pushed into marginal occupations considered socially inferior, such as tax and rent collecting and moneylending. This was said to show that Jews were insolent, greedy usurers.

The christian churches simply forbad usury as in charging excessive interests, however a charge could be levied on loans etc to cover expenses the rate of interest was one per cent per month laid down by the First Council of Nicaea in 325

Redneck and pikey do indeed indicate that someone is low class. They are not racist terms though.

Freddie isn't a scrounger. He doesn't claim benefits. He doesn't get an allowance from his parents either. All of his spending money he earns himself, whether it be from face painting in a nightclub or one of his business ventures. He has also has had regular jobs, something that Lisa has not for a very long time.

This. Redneck is not a race. If it's acceptable call uneduated British people chavs, then the same rule should apply for calling uneducated American people rednecks.

Nope, wrong. I don't whether it was on lf or the hl show where he said he didn't have a job but was living with his parents and so incurred no expenses. He himself admitted he would have signed on if he hadn't been able to live with his parents.

And Lisa had a job until 4 months ago. She has worked her whole life in factories. It's not easy to find a job in a recession; especially when your 41 with no qualifications and the only experience you have is working in a factory - an industry in decline.

Look up Fuggers of Augsburg. They were bankers in the 16th Century.Monumentally rich and Catholic, but look at their association with the Martin Luther the founder of Protestantism.

So, Christians and making HUGE fortunes from money lending. They also built the Fuggerei, the first social housing development in the world (with its own church at the centre of the 'village')
