I don't think that he is very insecure, and I am not sure how he copes in the house.... so I think the only think he grab is that the public likes him after keeping him in so many times...
I think his cockiness comes from his insecurities..
And I think he needs to give the impression of being superior, when in reality I think deep down he feels inferior in many things.
He has done things wrong and he can be deluded sometimes but Bea has taken advantage of his weakeness and got rid of him....
