Tonights Eviciton Help needed

I'm a bachelor and need to repair a split in my trousers before tonights eviciton.

When threading a needle, do I hold the needle up and thread the cotton through the back of the eye, or do I hold the needle up and thread the cotton through the front of the eye?

as far as i remember you thread the cotton through the side just beneath the syringe
